

He was born on July 23, 1945 in Superior, WI. This date was the hottest day in Superior in 1945 and the beginning of a life-long love of hot weather and sunshine.
Gene graduated from Superior East High School in 1963 and immediately enlisted in the US Navy. He served three and a half years aboard the USS Holder. His service included a tour of Vietnam and several commendations. In 1969 he and Madelon Brown, also of Superior, were married.
Due to Gene’s status as a Veteran he obtained an apprenticeship in the printing industry. He earned his journeyman papers and worked as a bindery-man until his retirement. Gene’s interests were many and varied. He enjoyed gardening and raised beautiful roses and orchids. He was an accomplished handyman who could build or repair a wide variety of things. He enjoyed music,dogs and antiques. Although Gene lived over thirty years in Arizona, he remained an ardent Green Bay Packers fan.
Gene is survived by his wife Madelon, his children: John (Sandra) Scanlon, Kathleen (Michael) Ewing and Michelle (James) Rice. His five grandchildren (Tara, Lauren, Alex, Lindsey, Anthony) as well as three great-grandsons. Gene had a great love of family and enjoyed all the time he spent with them. He also included Bob (Alison) Mathews, Nathan Blair and Andrew and Erin Ewing in his extended family.
