

John Randall “Randy” Griffis, 67, of Phoenix, AZ passed away May 26, 2022 after an unexpected battle with cancer. Randy was born on June 27, 1954 in Richmond, IN to Clarence and Barbara Griffis and lived his childhood in Campbellstown, OH. He graduated from National Trail High School in 1972. He was an exceptional athlete throughout his lifetime and played baseball for Ohio State where he attended college his freshman year. In 1973 he moved to Arizona with his parents and there graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in finance. With a talent for listening and customer care, he became a trusted, beloved Financial Advisor to his clients while working for Bank of America and Edward Jones. His kindness was also evident in his long-time support of local food banks and Toys for Tots. Randy was a big kid at heart and had a dry sense of humor that always made everyone laugh. He loved music, was a great dancer, and liked his rock-and-roll loud. In 1979 he married Cynthia Smith Griffis. They divorced in 2008 but remained friends. He had a lifelong interest in Major League Baseball and with his best friend once toured professional baseball parks around the country. He was also a big fan of Arizona Cardinals Football and regularly attended their home games. Indy 500 race day was one of his favorite days of the year. He was a gearhead and aficionado of all types of racing and once had the opportunity to drive the Bob Bondurant track in Phoenix. He enjoyed many visits to Carmel, CA, Sedona, AZ and recently realized his life-long dream of visiting New Zealand. “Moon Man” was his nickname as he loved to gaze at the moon and stars through his huge, powerful binoculars. Left to cherish his memory are: sister Linda Griffis Gibson, nephew Tony Gibson (Stacy), niece Brooke Gibson Tomblin (Andy); sister Brenda Griffis Spurlock (Mike), niece Jennifer Spurlock Sherman (Lucas), nephew Ryan Spurlock (Lauren); and numerous grand and great nieces and nephews; best friend and “brother” Steve DeAngelis, ex-wife Cynthia Smith Griffis, and girlfriend Collette Mercier. Randy’s spirit and memories of him will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he is already deeply missed.
