Born in Yale, Michigan, the oldest of five daughters, to Carl and Eleanor (Feagan) Granger on June 10, 1938, some of her happiest memories are of living and working at the family farm and being with her sisters.
A blind date in 1958 with a young railroad telegraph operator, Lee Koppel, turned into 55 years of marriage. With three kids in tow and a fourth on the way, they moved to Sierra Vista, Arizona in 1968 when Lee began his career with the Department of Defense at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.
A self-described introvert, Lois found a happy and safe place while being surrounded by her four-legged furry friends. She was a Dr. Doolittle of all animals … from her beloved horses Tara and Cindy to her pet ‘wild’ raccoon Pepper – no stray kitten, puppy, guinea pig or hamster her kids were constantly bringing home was ever turned away.
As an active member of the Sierra Vista Riding Club, Lois held various board positions and thoroughly enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her horses. As her kids grew and became involved with the Cochise County 4-H dog and horse groups she shared her knowledge and gift of working with animals. She was very proud of her work with mentally challenged children and her horse, Tara.
She will be remembered by her grandchildren as THE best scrambled egg maker, ever. Her pie crust secret will remain with her daughters. She played a mean rendition of Patti Page’s “How Much is that Doggie in the Window” on the piano and her son will never forget when she brought all of the kids to camp out at the riding club to witness Tara being born.
Lois was predeceased by her parents and husband. She is survived by her four children Dawn Glavick (Tony) of Oak Harbor, Washington, Tanya Koppel of Sacramento, California, David Koppel (Candace) of Mesa, Arizona and Kristi Koppel of Alamogordo, New Mexico and three grandchildren, Kandace Glavick, Samuel Glavick and Taylor Barth. Lois is also survived and sorely missed by her sisters, Carolyn Battista, Mary Callier, Sharon Grauerholz and Joanne Dawood. Her cat, Harry, also survives her and the family will continue to spoil him with many cat toys and canned food.
As per Lois’ request no services will be held. Donations in her name may be made to your local Hospice Care Center, American Diabetes Association or the Humane Society.
