

Michael was born on December 14, 1955, in Plattsburgh, New York, to George and Elizabeth (Thwaits) Harrington. Michael grew up in Moriah, New York, and graduated from Moriah Central High School in 1974. He continued his education at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. Following his graduation, Michael relocated to the Phoenix Metropolitan area of Arizona, a place he would call home for the rest of his life.
Michael had a distinguished career with the Arizona Department of Transportation, dedicating over 30 years to improving the state’s infrastructure. His work as a Civil Engineer was marked by a commitment to excellence and a passion for making travel safer and more efficient for all Arizonans.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Michael was a beloved member of his community. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering integrity. Michael gave of his time cheerfully and without hesitation. He joined the Knights of Columbus Holy Cross Catholic Church in 2012 and continued to serve at St. Timothy Catholic Church, his home parish, in Mesa Arizona. Michael was also active in the United Way and its Vita Program as well as the Salvation Army, and Paz de Cristo.
Michael is survived by his wife of 44 years Xochiquetzal Maria de la Luz (Lucy) Chavez Harrington. He is also survived by siblings: John Harrington of Port Henry, NY; William (Julie) Harrington of Sierra Vista, AZ and Tina (Steven) Gilbert of Azle, TX. In addition, Michael is survived by a plethora of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Michael was preceded in death by his son, Michael James in 1982.
A Prayer Service with Rosary and Divine Mercy will be held at 9:30 AM on July 10, 2024 at St.Timothy Catholic Church in Mesa followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Timothy’s Maintenance & Facilities Fund** or the US Hereditary Angioedema Association. Michael will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of spirituality, hard work, dedication, and love will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
