Mr. Shelton was a great teacher. He taught me and my brother. He was my 5th grade teacher. Lessons he taught me I carried on into middle school and eventually even high school. Teachers come and go and i often can’t remember the names of the teachers i have now, but something about how he was as a teacher makes me recall his name when i recollect on all the memories. I’m a senior in highschool now and his passing although not all that recent has became news to me recently. I wish my favorite teacher i ever had a good eternal rest.

I made it so far in life thank to you I remember you were my 5 grade teacher now I'm in the 10th grade I remember the book hatchet it was such a wonderful time when the entire class would listen to you read and your funny face expressions. My heart melted when I heard about your passing I couldn't believe it I still remember when we took a picture when I graduated from 5th grade I will never forget the amazing times you made me smile and I opened up to you so much you were so understandable.  You and your beautiful soul will never be forgotten may you rest happily if I can take back time and give you a last hug I would do anything in the world to accomplish that you will always have a huge place in my heart I'm who I am today thanks to you.💕

I’m so sorry for your loss. My 8th grader recently found out Mr. Shelton his wonderful teacher at carminati passed. He was my son’s favorite teacher mr Shelton saw the potential in my son encouraged him praised him and lifted him up. He was so wonderful and always kept me abreast of my son’s progress.  Thank you Mr. Shelton,  this world lost an awesome teacher way too soon.

Mr shelton was not only just a great teacher he was a great friend someone I loved to see everyday when I came to class, some one that loved their life and was just a loving person who would treat his students as if it was his own. I was in his 5th grade class where we would read, share stories, and do classwork. But I always will remember when I would have my bad days there, he would pull me out of the classroom and talk to me one on one and just tell me that, even though you are going through a hard time i'm with you bud. and he would tell me a joke to make me laugh and we would continue with the rest of the day. He would always be their for the kids and he was always their for me. I cant tell you how many times I would sit with him at recces and talk about stuff and stories. But I would always be there for him too when he was having a bad day. But my last memories with him is when the end of the year came in 6th grade at a school called gilliand where he would take the kids in the class to go to the school where they would have an open house but anyway it was during recces and i remember a bus pulling up and he came out with atleest 30 kids and he noticed me then he came up to me and I gave him a big hug then we just talked until a teacher called him over than he gave me another hug then walked into the school, that was the last time that i saw him but I just love to think he's in a place that he loves now. He wasn't just a teacher to me, he was my best friend. rest in peace mr shelton

Mr.shelton was my teacher his was silly. We watch old yeller with him .he said that we were his kids .It was fun with him for 8 months.

He was the best teacher I was in he class this year every one misses him and love him he was my brother teacher Isaiac graham and my cousin Mario mcwhoter my brother only got to see him once before he passed away and it was on my birthday day the last day my mom saw him was on my parent teacher conference and the last day I saw him was on Friday the 15th.RIP Mr Shelton you were the best we all love you and miss you and we did azmerit just for you. Every one was happy to always see him happy in class. REST IN PEACE LOVE YOU 

When I moved into my new house in Gila Bend I remember seeing 2 boys peeking through the bushes to see who was moving next door to them. Mike and Mitch were like brothers to me. We played basketball in their driveway, watched movies and played hide and seek at night in our little neighborhood. As we grew older, Mike and I would cruise around in his big, green car and sing along to the music on the radio.  I will never forget our long talks on the porch swing and the many laughs we shared. I loved seeing Michael at family gatherings... usually for one of the birthday's.  He was always smiling, having fun with the family and usually telling a great story!  You could see the love in him for his family -- especially for all the kiddos.  And, they had lots of love for him!  He will be missed!  

Mr. Shelton will never be forgotten.  He was a great teacher, the cool teacher everyone wanted to have.   He had so much spirit and was always happy.  My daughter Daisy was in his 5th grade class and she said he was truly the best teacher she ever had.  We were all sad to hear of his passing.  My condolences to his family, friends, and especially his students.  Travel well friend and may you rest in paradise.  

I remember when Michael first came to Carminati and when he started in 2nd grade.   I think he was the only male teacher there.  I got to know him and he was such an amazing person.   He was so sweet, nice, friendly.   I've known him for many years and not once did I see him unhappy.   Talking to him was always fun and always made me laugh.  As the years went on I was diagnosed with breast cancer.   I needed time off and I didn't have any due to the doctor's visits I had to keep going to so Michael donated time for me.  I never knew that he did until I was sent a letter from the district saying that he did.  I will always appreciate the heart this man had.   He was a great coworker and friend.  He will be truely missed by me and all others that were in his life.  Thank you Michael.  We will always love you.  

Michael and I taught at both Laird and Carminati Schools.  I had the privilege of knowing him as a colleague and the blessing of his friendship.  His students loved him so much.  He would share the books he read with his class and the great discussions they would have together.  The impact he had on their lives will go on forever.  

Michael was the staff member that every group needs.  That special person that could lighten every moment with his quick wit.  I always hoped he would be in the lounge at lunchtime because you'd be assured a good giggle or a great belly laugh.  Michael was also someone that you could discuss serious matters with and he was always compassionate, loving and kind.

Michael always spoke of his family and we knew how much he loved them.  He shared great memories of growing up in Gila Bend. I am so very sorry for their loss.

I have been replaying recent conversations with Michael and even though my heart is heavy, he is still making me smile.

Michael was one of a kind, a true original. I adored him as a baby and little boy. He kept us entertained from a very early age and continued to do so to the very end. I feel so blessed that we were able to visit for a few days with him in the Summer of 2017 at Newport Beach. He was so insightful and I learned so much from him during our last time together. He recommended a book during our visit that has become one of my all time favorites. A book about perspective and life’s simple truths that I could tell he was applying to his daily life as an adult. Love and peace to you Mike. You will be so missed. 

All 3 of my children were blessed to have Mr. Shelton as a teacher at Carminati Elementary.  With Lliam, he took the time to find out his strengths in his way of learning. Mr. Shelton was wonderful with the ASD kids in his class and never treated them differently than his NT students. With Poe, he went above and beyond and played an important part in getting her into Tempe Academy. He met with us and Ms. Helm to discuss how to get her grades up from C's and D's to all A's! He wrote a wonderful letter to the school for her acceptance. With Dax, again he took the time to understand how he ticked and worked with us to ensure his grades were up to par. During IEPs and Parent/Teacher conferences, he would always ask after Lliam and Poe to see how they were doing. He even made sure Lliam and his best friend were still friends. We saw Mr. Shelton the week before Spring Break for Dax's Parent/Teacher conference. After speaking about Dax, we stayed to chit-chat because he was more like a buddy than our child's teacher. Dax "held it together" in class when Ms. Reeck shared the sad news to the class. Poe had some tears in her eyes and Lliam just kept asking "why?" He was a caring, funny, witty and an understanding individual. My husband and I always looked forward to seeing him at school events as it was like seeing an old friend. I share a photo of Lliam and Mr. Shelton on his last day of 5th grade, May 2015. By far, this was Lliam's favorite teacher. He will forever be missed!

Michael was a one of a kind caring individual. His smile and presence at Carminati will be greatly missed. 

I worked with Michael at Carminati for a few years.  He was always helpful and a great teacher.  He passed way to young.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family ❤️

Michael never ceased to make me smile. He was a person that I could chat with, with ease, and leave the conversation in a better mood. He was the staff member that I hoped to see turn a hallway corner, walk into the lounge or sit close enough during a staff meeting that I could hear his running dialogue of questions and comments.

Two of my favorite memories of Michael were ongoing events. The first was his love to pose for my yearly fall festival photo. No other staff member complained yet immediately struck a pose when they saw my camera. The second was his use of my maiden name. He always addressed me by it and when I got married, he was kind of like, "nah, it doesn't work for me." He was the only person on campus that I still answered to if I heard, "Haslam!" (and I've been married for almost 7 years!!)

Michael's enthusiasm, humor, smile, and love will be greatly missed in the halls of Carminati. But his impact on the students, families, staff and me will never be forgotten.

You were such a big part of our family, and brought us so much laughter and happiness.  Thank you for loving our family with your whole heart and being such an amazing friend.  We will miss you dearly.  Until we meet again. 

Mr. Shelton leaves a bright memory in our hearts. He was Lexi's 5th grade teacher at Carminati Elementary School in 2016. 

He was friends with everyone, even the kids who weren't even in his class. He always made everyone feel welcome and accepted. I even noticed changes in the lives of kids who he helped. 

On the last day of school that year, Lexi remembers seeing him drinking a Polar Pop (he always drank those big Polar Pops!) and he was rapping something from the era of Fresh Prince of Bel Aire while hanging on a pole outside. He looked like a kid. He was really fun and said very funny things. He hosted a lip synch battle in his classroom the last week of school. Somehow he got everyone in class to listen. He talked about his grandma and his siblings and shared lots of great stories. 

From Danielle: As a parent, I appreciated all the great stories my daughter had from Mr. Shelton's class. I could tell she was very engaged and she loved having him as a teacher. I enjoyed talking with him during conferences, and we feel lucky that Mr. Shelton touched our and so many other's lives in a positive way.

I have many wonderful memories of Michael and I getting into mischief.  When we were young,  Granny Marge got mad at us for going out and getting dirty after she had just got us cleaned up to go somewhere.    She yelled and chased us with a broom trying to brush off all the dirt!  As teens, we went with Mitch out to the Gila River.  The river had water from a winter storm and we pressured Mitch to cross since he had a Jeep - you can go anywhere in the Jeep.   haha  The Jeep ended up getting stuck and Uncle Donny had to come get us.   The Jeep had to stay out there all night until we could get several other guys with their trucks to pull it out the next morning.   Michael and I had several Salt River floating trips where we enjoyed each others company and of course the beach trips where Michael always got buried in the sand!  From the ASU cockroach infested apartment, where you had to leave the lights on all night, the dancing at the clubs, and holidays with family -  I will remember it all!!  
My daughter, Megan, was born on the your birthday so I will never forget your birthday and I will always think of you forever on that special day.  You were loved very much and will be missed dearly.  You had a big heart, an infectious smile, and a great sense of humor.  Love you always.  May peace be with you.

Michael was not only my cousin but one of my best friends. He always had a smile and made me smile. Time is a trick. I always thought there would be more time. Gone but never forgotten. I love you Michael!

I met Michael through a mutual friend who connected us when I was young and had nowhere to live. Michael opened up his home and heart to me and was always good to me. He was always there to give advice and encouraged me to continue higher education. He was always a phone call or text away if I needed help with anything. He helped me push my car once when I was broken down and tried to get it started for me, dropping whatever he was doing if I was stuck and needed a jump. I remember he would take meals to the senior lady across the street all the time and recently attended her funeral. Michael was there when I graduated from college; more recently, he met with me after I lost my dad and close aunt last year to give me support. I will always remember Michael; he will live in my heart and memory forever.  Rushell, Mitch, and the rest of his family, thank you for sharing your loving brother with so many, including me. Michael was so selfless and so are you for sharing him. 

Deep gratitude always to, and for, Michael just for his being.  May your sweet soul travel peacefully.

There really are no words to fill the void in your heart. Our siblings are our first friends who really understand what made us.  We count on them. They help remind us of what we are made of, where we come from. They have away of keeping us in check, only like a sibling can.  The world is full of sensory triggers that in the beginning bring us to a total stand still. But as time passes you’ll smile and say, I know that was you, Michael, keeping me in check. Michael was one of my favorite children growing up with my daughter Jeri Frost. He was a sweet and funny child. Always making everyone laugh. We will miss him greatly. Love and prayers for his family. 

Our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Shelton. We had just seen him prior to spring break due to Parent teacher conferences and was the current teacher of our son Logan. He had made an impact on Logan's life, because Logan was a chilled, laid back learner he never rushed him to do anything. He was always encouraging and loved all his students and knew each and every one of them personally. 
Because of this impact he will be truly missed by parents, students, and faculty members. 

Mr. Shelton was a really good teacher. My sister and I both had him in  as our 5th grade teacher. He was one of the best teachers I've ever had and I'll always remember him that way. It breaks my heart that he has passed, but I hope he rests in peace. I'll live my best life in memory of him

Rest in peace Mr. Shelton, one of the best teachers I've ever had. You were always kind to me, and everyone else. My younger sister had you later, and you'd always ask her about me and how I'm doing, and I always appreciated it. Thank you.

Mr.Shelton was a big influence in my life he helped me through so much. 5th grade was a hard year for me I struggled in math and he was always there to help me and he always believed in me. Every once in a while when I would go back to Camrinatie I would go running to his classroom to go say Hi and to give him and hug it hurts me that I won’t be able to do that anymore he was a great teacher and a great friend he will always be remembered as an amazing incredible person. 

Rebekah, Gabriel and myself would like to express our condolences at the loss of Mr. Shelton.

Mr. Shelton had a huge impact on Rebekah's life her last year at Carminati. His instruction and support helped her to overcome many challenges, not the least of which was bullying.  His guidance and patience helped her to become a very strong young girl, who is now pursuing learning about professional manga/comic book design and graphic art.

Mr. Shelton was also a influential male figure for Gabriel, and someone he knew he could always come to, should he need to speak with a member of Staff about any concerns he may have had.

Our hearts go out to you all, and we sorrow with you in your time of loss.
