

He was born on October 5, 1918, the youngest of 5 children and one of two sets of twins to Ernest M and Jessie (Travis) Cook in Monument, Kansas. He grew up on a farm outside of Oakley, Kansas, and graduated high school in Oakley. He then attended and later graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He met Dorothy Howat (who later passed away) at Kansas State, and they married shortly after college. He held a series of civil engineering positions, notably with the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, and later with a predecessor to Mobil Oil which posted him to the South American jungle. He co-founded and was a principal of Cook, Flatt & Strobel Consulting Engineers in Topeka Kansas.
He retired in 1980, and then moved to Arizona in 1982. He met Gloria McCrea in 1982. They were later married on May 5, 1984. He was a silversmith, enjoyed woodworking, hiking, biking, swimming, and he visited most of the national parks over the years. He was also a Mason, Shriner, and member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Norman is survived by his wife, Gloria; sons Travis Cook, Terry Cook; step children Steven Davis and Robyn Wassom; and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the care of Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park in Mesa, Arizona.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, the Shriners, or Complete Hospice.
