

Roger Mark Sackett of Mesa, AZ, passed away on November 3, 2016 at the age of 89. He was born July 13, 1927 in Cleveland, OH to Theodore and Dorothy [Platt] Sackett; then at a very young age, Roger and his family relocated to Detroit, MI. At the age of 18, Roger enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on a Sea Plane Tender and was awarded multiple ribbons including the World War II Victory ribbon. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended the Lawrence Institute of Technology where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Roger worked in the construction business his entire life. In 1962, he joined the Austin Company, a design build company, as a Structural Estimator. In 1963, he served the District as a Project Planner until 1967 when he was named Project Manager of the Dow Chemical Company Project in Midland, MI. In 1968, he was named Assistant Manager of the Southeast District in Atlanta, GA and later District Manager. In 1980, Roger was elected to the position of the Vice President and District Manager of the Southeast District. The Austin Company’s primary source of business was Banking, Newspapers, Airlines and TV Station. Some of the Southeast District’s projects under Roger’s tenure were United Airlines in Wash., DC, Eastern Airlines in Miami, WOFL, Orlando, Sun Trust Operations Center in Orlando, Macon Telegraph, Charlotte Observer and Southland (better known as 7/11) to name a few. Roger retired from the Austin Company on July 31, 1992 after more than 30 years of service. Throughout his life, Roger enjoyed bird hunting, he loved golfing and played most of his life; he enjoyed playing “gin” with his buddies; he was a fabulous cook and everyone loved his culinary delights. Roger was also an avid trap shooter and participated in numerous competitive tournaments around the country with his wife, Betty, of almost 23 years. Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his son James Sackett. He is survived by his loving wife Betty and her children; his son, Pete Sackett of Atlanta, GA as well as his brother, Jim Sackett, of Oak Creek, CO.
