

Ronald L. (RON) Bonar was born on November 8, 1937 in Warren, Ohio to Alvin and Floy (Butler) Bonar. He was the youngest of four boys. The family moved to the "Farm" in Gustavus in 1940 when he was 3. The farm remains in the Bonar Family today.
Ron attended all 12 years of school in the same building in Gustavus, Ohio. He came to Fort Wayne in 1955 to attend Indiana Technical College and earned his degree in Civil Engineering. He met Carol Romary, was married in 1958 and started his family and Engineering career at the same time. They had four children. He was a member of the Indiana Air National Guard and in 1961 served in Chambly, France during the Berlin Crisis. After serving with the USAF in France he returned to the City Engineering Department and advanced to City Engineer. During his 15 years with the City Engineering Department and seven years as City Engineer he directed many projects. Through his leadership Fort Wayne became the first Indiana City to obtain federal funds for street improvements, a closed circuit TV for sewer inspection, city wide mapping and the construction of the Lake Avenue pumping station and ponds. He was a member of the Board of Public Works, City Planning Commission and the City-County Building Department. In 1976 he started his own Engineering and Surveying company with a drafting table in his bedroom. Using his knowledge gained in his 25 years with the City of Fort Wayne this "niche" proved very successful and the firm grew rapidly. On January 8, 2000 Governor Frank O'Bannon honored him as a member of the Council of the Sagamore of the Wabash. While serving as President of Bonar Group for 24 years, the firm grew to over 80 employees with 4 Indiana offices. He transferred ownership of Bonar Group to his employees in 2000.
He was a member of Unity Fort Wayne Spiritual Center and served on the Board for 25 years. He also served 9 years on the Board of Unity World Headquarters at Unity Village in Missouri. In 1989 at Unity he met Mary and they were married on April 21, 1989 in Braydon Beach, Florida. He enjoyed traveling, running, vegetable and rose gardening and football. His true passion was spending time with his children and family.
Preceded in death was his wife Mary Kay Bonar, 2022. Surviving are his children Michael (Kristin) Bonar of Mesa, AZ, Cheryl (Gary) Laski of Fairfield, CA, Douglas (Kelly) Bonar of Noblesville, IN., and his son Stephen, who preceded him in death. His Grandchildren Ashley Friddle, Tyler (Corrina) Bonar, Dustin (Triana) Bonar, Travis (Kendall) Bonar, Mitchal Bonar, Rachel Laski, Victoria Bonar, Gary Laski Jr. and Bethany Bonar. Great Grandchildren are Dylan Perino, Connor Perino, Jenisis Ebel, Ryleigh Bonar, Jackson Bonar, Evan Bonar and Emma Bonar. Surviving are his sister in- law and family Sally (Zdzislaw) Achramowicz, David Achramowicz and Dr. Eugenia Achramowicz Malenkos. As well as many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death were his three brothers and their spouses, Clyde (Julie) Bonar, Dale (Kitty) Bonar and Garth (Helen) Bonar.
His life was filled with family gatherings including the biennial "Bonar Family Reunion" held at the homestead farm which was one of his greatest joys. With around 150 family and friends coming together with matching hats and t shirts provided an unforgettable occasion. Family memories were rich in his mind.

Another Celebration of Life will be held on October 11, 2025, around noon, at the Unity Spiritual Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on 3232 Crescent Ave.
Final burial will be in July of 2026 in Farmdale, Ohio.
