Vernora Iva Oakes nee Sturdevant joined her Lord at 12:12 PM April 11, 2012. She was surrounded by her extended family and was resting peacefully when she chose to join her Lord. Vernora, known to all as Shorty or Mom, desired that we celebrate her life by sharing memories, pictures and stories. Please join with us in honoring her life and memory with a prayer. If you have a story that recalls how she impacted your life please share that with her family.
Vernora raised six children amid the changing time of the 1950's and 1960's. She lived through the Great Depression, World War II where she served as an active duty WAVE in the US Navy, and the first man on the moon. While she accepted computers she still loved to write notes and letters. Vernora also survived the loss of her son Paul.
Mom moved to Mesa, AZ after her life long lover and partner David Oakes passed on. She quickly called Las Palmas Grand her home. Vernora was a fixture in the park and happily engaged in a variety of activities; although we believe she enjoyed winning at BINGO the most. She could be seen riding her bicycle around the park waving and greeting all she met. Her spirit and enthusiasm will be missed by all that knew her.
Please remember Vernora as we do, with love and admiration.
