Mel was a caring gentle kind family man, who loved his family and cared for his wife Emily after their accident. He was Pops to the guys and Papa to the girls in the family and all their friends and any acquaintances who were blessed to know him. If you happened to stop in you knew where the cold drinks were but the cold coke aka ‘beer’ vintage cooler required 50 cents for a cold one. Mel loved the Dallas Cowboys, NASCAR, Country Music, Gospel Music and could match his voice to whoever was singing on the radio. He delighted in going to see George Jones, Mickey Gilley and was always ready to go. He found joy in tinkering with his tractors and gardening.
Melvin found his second love in 2011, together they traveled the U.S.A. making many memories on countless adventures. Over a period of 7 years they traveled all but 8 of the contiguous states; museums, national parks, NASCAR tracks, memorials, and stadiums would not be missed. He loved taking his great-grandchildren to Galveston as often as he could and visiting his great-grandchildren in New England and Washington. He was loved dearly by his church family, who he was very active with.
Many knew him as a successful business man; he started Shearer Electric in 1972 from his garage in Mesquite, Tx. The company has grown over the past 48 years to employee hundreds over the years. He has been active with his company until his recent illness.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in his name.
