January 1, 1935 – July 4, 2025
Robert Keats Knickerbocker passed away peacefully at home in Dallas, TX, on July 4, 2025, at the age of 90. Born in South Kingstown, R.I., on New Year’s Day, he lived a full life marked by determination, strong convictions, and deep love for his family.
He earned a BA from SMU in 1956 and later returned to complete a Master in Liberal Studies in 2012. A proud member of the Kappa Alpha Order, Robert also played basketball on scholarship during his time at SMU.
He served honorably in the United States Navy, stationed in Key West, FL. Robert went on to have a successful career in real estate, often saying, “It’s all about buying right.” He found joy in investing, leading community organizations, and running marathons, including one in his 60s after recovering from a stroke and a torn Achilles. He was also an avid tennis player who brought fierce energy and volume to every match, a competitor to the core.
A lifelong learner, passionate conservative, and committed leader, Robert served as President of Toastmasters, the Dallas Park Cities Kiwanis Club, the Agape Sunday School Class at Highland Park United Methodist Church, and the Waterford Square Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Calyx and Dervish Men’s Clubs in Dallas.
He loved hosting family gatherings at Royal Oaks Country Club and was never one to shy away from the spotlight. He was bold, opinionated, incredibly generous, and completely unforgettable. He demanded respect and gave loyalty, lived with intensity, and loved with his whole heart.
Robert is survived by his daughter Dana Knickerbocker Tennyson (James) of Pottsboro, TX; grandchildren Robert Tennyson of Denton, TX, Samantha Tennyson of Pottsboro, TX, and Lane Tennyson of Dallas, TX; nephew Alex Forbes (Julie) of Arnold, MD; and cousins Janet Pearce, Sue Wheaton, Suzanne K. Colt, Drusilla Munnell, and Katherine Knickerbocker. He is also survived by his former stepchildren, Lisa Foster and James A. McMurrey.
He was preceded in death by his beloved sister Alzada Knickerbocker, parents Kenneth and Dorothy Knickerbocker, and cousins Ron Knickerbocker, Carol Safran, Miranda DeKay, Julia Knickerbocker, and Anne McDonald.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, TX 75205. A reception will follow from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Maggiano’s Little Italy, 205 NorthPark Center, Dallas, TX 75225.
