Betty Jane Evans, aged 89, a life-long resident of New Orleans, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, July, 20 2022. Miss Evans was residing at Bailey Place Assisted Living in Bunkie, LA after evacuating there for Hurricane Ida. Prior to moving to Bunkie, LA, Miss Evans had resided at 148 W Henfer, River Ridge, LA for many happy years.
Betty was born to Elmo Lionel Evans and Clemence (Landry) Evans on March 14, 1933 at their home in Kenner, La. As the first daughter in the family, Betty enjoyed an idyllic childhood out in the country. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lionel Evans and Clemence Landry Evans, and her older brothers, Wilbur Evans, Stanley Evans, and Lloyd Evans.
Betty was a nurse by trade and specialized in pediatric care. She had a long career at Ochsner Hospital in Jefferson parish. She loved babies and children of all ages. She could often be found with a child on her lap, or a baby in her arms, She loved her friends - if you were her friend, you were family. She always made every effort to stay in touch with those she loved and liked nothing more than a long chat on the phone, just to catch up, offer encouragement, or praise one’s achievements.
She set a great example of independence, and the “make it do, use it up or do without“ mentality. Her mantra was if you want something - work for it and have fun once you get it! She had one of the first Ford Mustangs that was all the rage. As well as a moped and a VW pop up camper which she used to explore the US. At a time when most women were homemakers, Betty was blazing new trails accompanied by a bunch of friends or relatives. She owned her own house in a time when not so many women owned real estate. She kept crawfish nets in the trunk of her car because you “just never know”. She loved socializing, travel and exploring new restaurants, and was an active member of the Ochsner “Go Club”
She is survived by her sister, Beverly (Evans) Benoit and a large number of nieces and nephews.
