

Christopher Nordean Baker was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 7, 1968. Chris passed away on February 3, 2017 at East Jefferson General Hospital. He attended Grace King High School and was involved in founding the Grace King High School Alumni Association. Chris attended the University of New Orleans and graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of General Studies. After hurricane Katrina while living in Haughton, Louisiana and teaching full time at Doyline Elementary School, he commuted to Ruston, and received a Master of Arts in Teaching from Louisiana Tech University in 2007. Chris furthered his education with an additional Master of Education in Education Administration from Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas in 2014. Chris served as a teacher in the Louisiana School System for over 10 years. Chris, being a great believer in education, he started his own business, Baker Learning Center in 2013. At the time of his death, Chris served as Academic Dean at Chateau Estates School. He was in the United States Coast Guard Reserves, serving at Eighth Coast Guard District R, being honorably discharged on 20th September, 2001. Chris joined the Coast Guard Auxillary on 2015, and was the Commander of Flotilla 4-7, at the time of his demise. As a great believer in community service, Chris not only was one of the founders of Grace King Alumni in 2009, served as the President multiple years. During his years at University of New Orleans, Chris served as an officer in the Theta XI and was very active in the UNO Alumni Association, serving as President for multiple years. Chris was active in CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), from 2011 to 2015, with the exception of taking time to have open heart surgery in 2014. Chris was preceded in death by his father, Harold Nordean Baker. He is survived by his mother, Bonnie Baker; wife, Rebecca Caniban; sisters Deanna Thibodeaux, Shannon Marrs; brother Kevin Baker; nieces Whitney Thibodeaux, Allison Marrs, Abbigail Marrs; nephews Dillon Thibodeaux, and Conner Thibodeaux. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service at LEITZ-EAGAN Metairie, 4747 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, on Tuesday afternoon, February 7, 2017 at 5:00. Visitation will begin at 3:00. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to Jefferson Federation of Teachers and/or American Heart Association are preferred.
