

Ethel-Jane Smith of Metairie, known as “Sammy” to all, passed away peacefully in her sleep November 4, 2016, at the age of 89. She was born in Memphis, TN, moved to Bay St. Louis, MS as a baby and finally settled in New Orleans at the age of 12 where she spent the rest of her life. She attended Newcomb College and the UNO College of Fine Arts to pursue her love of art and refine her talent for painting. She liked the expressionist style and did many paintings in different mediums. After two previous marriages, she met Thomas M. Smith in the singles movement in 1981. They were married 29 years ago and have been inseparable ever since enjoying their family, square dancing and attending church. Sammy was preceded in death by her parents Henry Watterson Osoinach and Cecilia Yaeger Osoinach, her brothers Henry and John Osoinach and her sisters Cecelia Aiden, Grace-Lou Osoinach, and Elizabeth Thompson as well as her oldest daughter Janine Zengel Theriot. She is survived by her son Peter Zengel and her daughter Elizabeth Zengel Salisbury, 8 grandchildren Ronald Theriot Jr., Karen Theriot, Isabelle Theriot, Corinna Zengel, Alexandra Zengel, Michael Zengel, Clifford Charlton, Molly Sanders, and 7 great-grandchildren. In high school at Sophie Wright she was voted the sweetest girl in her class and is remembered by all for her sweet disposition. She was a refined, cultured and gentle lady. She will be sorely missed. Her family and friends will celebrate her life in a memorial service at Parkway Presbyterian Church, 6200 Camphor Street, Metairie, LA 70003 on Saturday, November 12th at 1:00 PM.
