With the passing of Frederick William Kunz III, on December 2, 2016 the family mourned the end of an era. Frederick was the only son of Fred W. Kunz, II and Vera Mullen Kunz. He began life January 31, 1926 on Audubon Blvd. when his father was President of the New Orleans Board of Trade and his mother was a charter member of the Orleans Club. Life began anew for the family after the Great Depression when Frederick started a bicycle paper route to pay for his tuition to St Anthony of Padua on Canal Street. After high school graduation he volunteered to serve in the Navy and was deployed to Iwo Jima. He was lost at night in enemy territory with bullets flying overhead while driving a jeep. Miraculously, he made it back to base. Returning stateside, with the help of the G.I. Bill, he graduated from Loyola University where he became a lifetime member of Sigma Alpha Kappa fraternity. He then re-enlisted as a Lt. in the Army. He married his wife of over 60 years, Gloria Wynn, and served at Fort Hood, Texas during the Korean Conflict. He returned to New Orleans where he completed coursework for his Master's Degree from Tulane University. As a New Orleans businessman he followed in his father's footsteps as a Director with the N.O. Board of Trade. He was very active in the Young Men's Business Club for many years and worked tirelessly for the Republican Party helping his Goddaughter's husband, Charles Lancaster, become the longest serving State Legislator in Louisiana history. He retired from D & W Paper Company at the age of 70. Even after retirement, he was an avid tennis player and enjoyed line dancing. Our father was very humble about his life's work but we felt he wouldn't mind this small tribute to a life well-lived. He is survived by his two children, Dr. Frederick W. Kunz, IV and Jeannie, his two grandchildren, Kelly Liford Melancon and Dr. Jenny Liford Sones and four grandchildren, John, James, Sage and Hunter. He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Lucile Worsham Cooke, Shirley Kunz Lammond and Edith Shannon Spencer. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Freddie. He will be interred next to his wife in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Madison, Florida. Donations in his name to the WWII museum would be appreciated.
