James Frank McGinity, lovingly known as “Jimmy Dagger”, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. He was born in New Orleans and raised in the Irish Channel before making his home in Metairie. Proud of his roots and surrounded by a close-knit family, he lived a life full of laughter, love, music, and unforgettable stories.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, James T. and Rose Laurie McGinity; his daughter, Michelle and his son, James P. “Lil’ Jimmy". He is survived by his loving wife, Melinda Mueller; his daughters, Colleen and Meghan; his sisters, Janie Rose and Cynthia Hare (Bill) and many nieces and nephews whom he loved with his whole heart. Family was not just part of Jimmy's world - we were his whole world.
Jimmy proudly served in the United States Navy, dedicating his early years to the service of our country. He was a beautiful man of many talents and endless charm. He loved to cook, entertain, laugh and wander through antique shops searching for that special treasure.
He enjoyed days when he was out fishing, firing up the barbecue or entertaining in the backyard by his swimming pool - always filled with music and surrounded by the people he loved most. Countless birthdays, holidays, and gatherings were celebrated there, creating memories his family and friends will forever cherish. Piper and Shelby, his constant companions and faithful pups, were never far from his side. Jimmy also enjoyed riding his Harley, especially taking long runs down River Road.
Jimmy’s musical talents were unmatched. As the lead singer and guitarist for numerous New Orleans bands - including Stitch, Nightshift, Obsession, Home Boys, The Accused, Blind Ambition, The Blues Bangers, Pig Pen and the Porkchops, Mystery Fish, and the Fabulous Von Zippers - he sang and played with a depth of true heart and feeling that left a lasting impression on everyone who heard him. Music was in Jimmy’s soul - he wrote and performed many of his original songs throughout his years on stage. Jimmy was absolutely a talented, well-respected and professional musician who was admired by so many - he shared the stage with numerous well-known artists; however, his passion was playing with his friends - his bandmates.
Known for his sense of humor, Jimmy’s stories and jokes could fill any room with laughter - he always laughed the loudest and that would make us laugh a lot longer. His love of life was contagious, his spirit unforgettable.
We have lost a very special man; a beautiful man whose presence brightened the world. Jimmy's light lives on in every story he told, every song he sang for us and every heart he touched. Anyone fortunate enough to have known Jimmy will carry his memory forever.
Always loved. Forever missed. Held forever in our hearts.
