

John Hurter Gordon III passed away on ... following a brave fight against cancer. John was born in 1952 in Ann Arbor, Michigan and grew up in Birmingham, Michigan graduating from Detroit Country Day School in 1971. He attended University of Virginia for two years and graduated from Michigan State University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He attended graduate school at Colorado State University.
Following his marriage to Deborah Broadwell, a native New Orleanian, he moved to Tchefuncta estates in the Covington area in 1981 where he raised his son and became active in the community. John was on the Board of Directors of Christ Episcopal School acting as their first treasurer. He was also active in Christ Episcopal Church and enjoyed singing in the choir.
John was a partner in Orleans Capital Management, a national investment advisory firm based in New Orleans, acting as a managing director for many years. He also served as an advisor and Executive Board Member for the National Conference for Public Employee Retirement Systems.
John was a driving force in the early years of the Krewe of Orpheus in New Orleans. During his tenure with the Krewe he served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer and as Vice-President. He was also the Officer of the Smokey Mary float and was instrumental in expanding this well recognized float into one of the largest in Mardi Gras.
John was co-founder of the Northshore Hockey League in the Covington/Mandeville area. He also introduced hockey to St. Paul’s School and was their coach for many years. He was instrumental in the development of the St Tammany Hockey Arena in the Covington area.
John was an avid golfer and served on the Board of Directors of Tchefuncta Country Club as well as chairman of their Swingfest Golf Tournament winning the event twice.
John is survived by his wife Deborah Broadwell Gordon, son John Hurter Gordon IV, father Dr. Clayton Hill Gordon, mother Grace Fletcher Gordon, brother Dr. Peter Fletcher Gordon and sister Susan Gordon Kern.

A funeral will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 S. New Hampshire St., Covington, LA on Wednesday December 8, 2010 at 12 noon. Visitation from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. A private burial will be held following the services. Condolences may be offered at www.leitzeaganfuneralhome.com
