The world lost an extraordinary man when Julio Cabrera, Sr. entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. Julio or “Abue/Awui” as he was affectionately called by loved ones was born in Havana, Cuba on April 16, 1941. He traveled to America in his mid-twenties in search of a better life without even knowing the English language. He taught himself the language and settled in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was there he met the love of his life, Charlene Fitzpatrick. They were married for 52 years and together they planted their roots in St. Bernard, Louisiana. Julio is preceded in death by his father, Luis Cabrera Prieto, mother, Julia Marital Cabrera, and two brothers, Luis Cabrera (Urbelina), and Raymond Cabrera. Julio is survived by his wife, Charlene Cabrera, daughter Tracy Buras (Troy),son Julio Cabrera, Jr. (Heather), grandchildren Victoria (Ashton), Julio III, Noah, and Tatiana. Also survived by his only neice, Urbe Cabrera who held a special place in his heart. He will be missed by a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends both here in America and in Cuba. Julio was very easy to fall in love with because of his kind and gentle soul that put everyone at ease. He believed in living life to the fullest which is why there was never a dull moment around him with all his jokes. Julio had a passion for bowling, baseball, shooting pool, watching Saints football, corn hole, darts and being a master at Cuban dominoes. He had a green thumb, loved to cook, and made the best flan on the planet. He could build or fix anything without even looking at the instructions. “Abue/Awui” was a hard worker always willing to do whatever was needed to be done to take care of his family. He made a career as a painter/sandblaster from 1969-2004 with the Painters Local Union 1244. He was an amazing husband, caring father, and adoring grandfather. No words can express the heartbreak felt by the whole family and host of friends left behind. We only take comfort in knowing that this is not a good-bye, but it’s just until we meet again. In the immortal words of Abue/Awui, “See you on Monday!”
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering to be held on July 2, 10-11am visitation, 11-12pm Mass at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 2320 Paris Road, Chalmette, LA 70043.
