Margaret Smyth Berzas

She was born March 20, 1957, in Houston, Texas. She married John D. Berzas on September 10, 1983.

Margaret proudly served over 25 years as a civilian for the United States government entities such as the U.S. Navy, ending her career with the U.S. Coast Guard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, Brian Yardumian-Smyth and Pearl DiBella Smyth; a brother, Brian Smyth, Jr and a sister, Carolyn Smyth Couvillion.

Margaret is survived by her daughters, Jessica (Daniel) Barnes and Deannie Berzas; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Berzas (Mary Jean); a stepson, Darwin Berzas and two sisters, Kathleen (David) Ford and Theresa Smyth. She is also survived by her grandchildren, step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Before returning to Louisiana in 2024, Margaret lived a decade in East Texas where she was cared for by many in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

Visitation will be held at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. with a service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Tyler Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center (TDHHC) PO Box 6134 Tyler, Texas 75711.
