Maria Carames Garcia

Maria was born on April 9, 1934 in Ermita, Cuba to Manuel Carames Domo and Gloria Artimez Gonzalez.

A woman who was always passionate about her family, Maria was raised with her siblings Francisco

“Paco,” Manuel “Manolo,” Gloria “Nena,” Jose “Pepe,” Enrique “Jovero,” Lourdes, and Angel. A country

girl to her core, Maria always had a strong opinion of how things were and had a direct, strong, and

frequently salty way of communicating her thoughts. On December 14, 1952 Maria married Hector Vidal

Garcia Menéndez in Guantánamo, Cuba. In the next few years, they were blessed with two children,

Hector Manuel and Maria “Macu.” She raised her children in a household of faith and was a life-long

member of the Catholic church.

Throughout the next years, Maria supported her husband in various entrepreneurial endeavors until the

Cuban Revolution of the 1950’s forever changed her life, taking away her husband’s livelihood, sowing

division in her parents’ family, and creating in her heart a deep-seated hatred for communism and “el

sinvergüenza,” Fidel Castro.

As the revolution ravaged her native country, she and Hector decided to follow their son to the United

States arriving in New Orleans, LA days before Christmas 1979. They remained in New Orleans, LA for the next 20 years until 1999 when they moved to Metairie, LA to be closer to their children who were now

both in the area, as they had helped Macu and her family come to Metairie in 1997. Maria embodied the

doting Abuela, showering her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with delicious treats, exceptional

cooking, and endless supply of hugs and kisses.

Maria is preceded in death by her parents and siblings and is survived by her beloved spouse of 69 years,

Hector Vidal Garcia Menendez of Metairie, LA; her two children, Hector Manuel and Marguerite Garcia

of Metairie, LA; Maria and Daniel Bles of Metairie, LA; her six Grandchildren: Jeremy Garcia of Metairie,

LA, David Garcia of Las Vegas, NV, Brian Garcia of Spring, TX, Andrew Garcia of Spring, TX, Olga Pinar of Metairie, LA, and Megan Bush of Cheverly, MD; her 19 Great-grandchildren Madison Garcia (21), Abigail Garcia (20), Elijah Garcia (15), Katherine Garcia (15), Gabriel Garcia (13), Claire Garcia (13), Iris Garcia (11), Vincent Garcia (11), Joshua Garcia (11), Jacqueline Garcia (9), Marguerite Garcia (9), Atticus Bush (8), Roxanna Garcia (7), Isabel Pinar (6), Henry Garcia (5), Sybil Garcia (5), Edith Garcia (5), Calvin Bush (4), Aleyna Pinar (10 months), and a twentieth great-granddaughter, who is expected in December. Sin vergüenzas, all. Maria also had a tempestuous relationship with her dog, Polito, but he will undoubtedly miss her.

A Visitation for Maria will be held Monday, August 23, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5025 Cleveland Pl, Metairie, Louisiana. A Memorial Service will follow. Interment will take place at 3:00 PM at Lake Lawn Park, 5454 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, Louisiana

María de los Ángeles Carames Artimez de García, de 87 años, pasó al otro lado del velo el

jueves, 19 de agosto de 2021 en su casa en Metairie, Louisiana.

María nació el 9 de abril de 1934 en Ermita, Cuba de Manuel Carames Domo y Gloria Artimez

González. Una mujer siempre apasionada por su familia, María se crió con sus hermanos

Francisco “Paco”, Manuel “Manolo”, Gloria “Nena”, José “Pepe”, Enrique “Jovero”, Lourdes y

Angel. María, una jovencita de campo hasta la médula, siempre tenía una fuerte opinión de

cómo deberían ser las cosas y tenía una forma directa, fuerte y frecuentemente creativa de

comunicar sus pensamientos. El 14 de diciembre de 1952 María se casó con Héctor Vidal

García Menéndez en Guantánamo, Cuba. En los próximos años, fueron bendecidos con dos

hijos, Héctor Manuel y María "Macu". Crió a sus hijos en un hogar de fe y fue miembro de la

Iglesia Católica toda su vida.

A lo largo de los años siguientes, María apoyó a su esposo en varios esfuerzos empresariales

hasta que la Revolución Cubana de la década de 1950 cambió su vida para siempre, quitando

el sustento de su esposo, sembrando división en la familia de sus padres y creando en su

corazón un odio profundamente arraigado hacia comunismo y “el sinvergüenza”, Fidel Castro.

Mientras la Revolución devastaba su país natal, ella y Héctor decidieron seguir a su hijo a los

Estados Unidos y llegaron a New Orleans, LA, días antes de la Navidad de 1979.

Permanecieron en Nueva Orleans, LA durante los siguientes 20 años hasta 1999, cuando se

mudaron a Metairie, LA para estar más cerca de sus hijos que ahora estaban en el área, ya que

Macu y su familia emigraron a Metairie en 1997. María encarnó a la abuela cariñosa, colmando

a sus nietos y bisnietos con delicias sabrosas, cocina excepcional, y suministro interminable de

abrazos y besos.

María es precedida en la muerte por sus dos padres y siete hermanos. Le sobreviven su amado

esposo durante 69 años, Héctor Vidal García Menéndez de Metairie, LA; sus dos hijos, Héctor

Manuel y Marguerite García de Metairie, LA; Maria y Daniel Bles de Metairie, LA; sus seis

(15), Gabriel García (13), Claire García (13), Iris García (11), Vincent García (11), Joshua

García (11), Jacqueline García (9), Marguerite García (9), Atticus Bush (8), Roxanna García (7),

Isabel Pinar (6), Henry García (5), Sybil García (6) , Edith García (5), Calvin Bush (4), Aleyna

Pinar (10 meses), y una bisnieta número 20, que se espera para diciembre. Sinvergüenzas,

todos. María también tuvo una relación tempestuosa con su perro, Polito, pero sin duda la

extrañará.

Su vida se celebrará en un velorio desde las 10 am hasta la 1 pm y un servicio conmemorativo a la 1 pm el Lunes 23 de Agosto de 2021 en la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Ultimos Dias ubicado en 5025 Cleveland Pl. Metairie, LA.
