Marilyn B. Prejean passed away, surrounded by family, on Monday, April 7, 2025, after a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Houma, LA to Gladys Fonseca and John F. Prejean, Sr. While she spent most of her adult life in the Washington DC area, she never forgot her Louisiana roots, often bringing guests to share food and culture.
Marilyn was a volunteer and advocate for feral cats in her neighborhood, providing food, healthcare, and even adoptions. She also volunteered at her church, tasked with multiple archival duties and developing the church's website. She volunteered to be one of the first Eucharistic Ministers for AIDS patients (1980's - 1990's) at George Washington University Hospital. Her employment history centered around academia, working as office or clinic manager and medical education researcher. She also had a brief stint as a flight attendant and assistant teacher. She was ahead of her time with her online blog, Madame Citizen, followed by prominent DC area newspaper editors who often contacted her to discuss her opinions and topics.
One of Marilyn's greatest joys was traveling, seeing new sights and learning about new cultures. Her lifelong companion, Duke Wilson, often took her places he had known in business ventures, joining old friends and making new ones. Duke encouraged her gardening and her writing. They particularly enjoyed visiting for Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest to really enjoy the food and music and carnival festivities.
Marilyn is survived by her sisters, Evelyn Prejean MSN, RN and Bernadette "Bunny" P. Clement; her brothers, John F. Prejean Jr., MD, Steven M. Prejean (Kit), Rene E. Prejean, and Alpha (Duke's cat). She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Louis J. Prejean; a brother-in-law, Douglas J. Clement; a niece, Rhonda Clement Corte; a nephew, Brandon C. Prejean and her companion of 40 years, Duke Wilson.
The family would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Khan and his team at Marsh Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD for their enduring commitment and outstanding healthcare to our sister throughout her illness and also to Fr. Charles Dussouy and the prayer group from Our Lady of Perpetual Help for all their support and prayers and many kindnesses. A special thank you to Keyawana Collins and her daughter, our "angels" in home care and to all our family's friends whose support and kindness will never be forgotten.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie, LA. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. Interment will be private.
