Nellie Marie Salzman

Nellie Jones Salzman, age 88, passed away on Monday, December 13, 2010, following complications related to a stroke. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Donald Merle Salzman. Also preceding her were 2 sisters, Elmora Jones and Roberta Jones Rutan and 2 brothers, Marion and John Jones. She is survived by 2 daughters, Marilyn Salzman Ripoll (Joey) and Donna E. Salzman, MD and 1 son, Roger T. Salzman. She was the loving grandmother to Teddy (Michelle), Beau and Jo Gabrielle Ripoll. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a native of Indianapolis, Indiana but lived in the New Orleans area for the past 55 years. Prior to her marriage, she was a professional flutist with the Indianapolis Philharmonic Orchestra. Following her move to New Orleans, she became an elementary school teacher and administrator, employed by the Jefferson Parish School Board for 23 years. She continued her music career as a private music teacher and member of the Sigma Alpha Iota, International Music Fraternity.

She was a devoted member of Memorial Baptist Christian Church serving as a Sunday School teacher, member of the choir (both singing and playing the flute), and as a Board Member for MBCS.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive in Metairie, LA on Friday, December 17, 2010. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with interment in the Resurrection Mausoleum in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
