Patricia Ann Warren Thevenot, affectionately known as Maw Maw, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023. The family mourns her loss but celebrates the incredible life she lived. She was born on June 23, 1935, in New Orleans to her parents Mary Gallaher and Philip Warren Jr.
Pat lived a truly worthwhile life, full of faith, family, and friends. After attending St. Anthony of Padua, Dominican High School, and Loyola University, she followed her dreams and moved to New York City. A couple years and many great stories later, she was called back to New Orleans where she fell in love and married Frank Thevenot on December 29, 1962. Inspired by her own mother, she began teaching, spending over 30 years as a 2nd grade teacher at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. She was often approached by former students expressing how she had been their favorite teacher!
Pat was a long-time parishioner, lector, and member of the Adoration Team at Our Lady of Divine Providence Church and was awarded the Order of St. Louis award by the New Orleans Archdiocese. For many years, she contributed a weekly column, “Keeping the Faith,” to the Times-Picayune that detailed events and activities from various places of worship throughout the city. While she was always committed to her Catholic faith, she enjoyed learning more about other religions and even incorporating their traditions. Every Christmas season, she would remind her family, “Jesus was Jewish!” She may have been one of the only Catholic women to bring out her menorah before putting up her Christmas tree.
After retiring, Pat showed no signs of slowing down. She was interested in genealogy and sought out friendships with distant cousins throughout the US. She was so proud of her Irish heritage and even visited Ireland with some of her best friends. She was a member of many clubs and organizations, including the Dominican High School Alumnae organization, Jefferson Volunteers for Family and Community, Silver Wings, Red Hat Society, Delta Booster Club, the Green Park PTA, the OLDP PTA, The Homemaker’s Club, Ivy League Garden Club, and the Bunco Beauties.
She was an amazing friend - so kind, caring, and witty. She would drop anything to answer a phone call from a friend, but nothing brought her more joy than watching family and friends enjoy each other’s company at her house.
While her friends and family will miss her immensely, we are so proud of her and the life that she lived. What a gift her 88 years have been to each and every person she touched. We find solace in her reunion with Frank after almost 20 years of being widowed, and we commit ourselves to following her example of leading with love, compassion, curiosity, and most importantly family. “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” - John F. Kennedy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Philip Warren III, and her beloved husband Frank. In addition to many of her friends and former students, she leaves behind six children - Louis (Lyle) Thevenot, Robert (Michele) Thevenot, Thomas (Allison) Thevenot, Yvette (James “Billy”) Spinner, Denise Thevenot, and Warren (Kristy) Thevenot - and sixteen grandchildren - Anthony, Noah, Zachary, Andrea, Noel, Joy, Nathan, Pierre, Allie, Rachel, Tobin, Nicole, Dylan, Frankie, Ryan, and Carson.
Visitation will take place at Our Lady of Divine Providence Church, 8617 W. Metairie Ave. on August 11 from 11am-1pm with Funeral Mass to follow at 1pm. Interment will be in St. Patrick No. 1 Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the OLDP Debt Reduction Fund at www.oldp.org.
