September 2nd, 1930 - November 28th, 2020
In the early hours of Saturday, November 28th, 2020, Alves S Cambridge, loving Husband & Father, passed peacefully at Baptist Hospital, in Miami, Florida. He was 90 years old. Alves was predeceased by his devoted and adoring Wife of 68 years, Cynthia Yvonne Cambridge, and he leaves three children, Melanie Cambridge, Andrea Gonzales, & Andrew Cambridge. And, three Grandchildren, Patrice Gonzales, Avery Cambridge, and Andrew Cambridge. He was also a beloved Uncle to Marcus Lopez. Alves was a devoted family Man and thrilled to be with his family on special occasions, vacations, and the holidays. And his family loved to be with him because he was always working.
Alves Cambridge was born in the breathtakingly beautiful county of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica in 1930 to Vernon Stanley Cambridge and Adina (nee Wright). He studied at King's College in Kingston, Jamaica. Alves started his career circumnavigating the treacherous roads of Jamaica selling hardware to the small towns, hamlets, businesses, and hotels he encountered along the way. Over time he built up enough clientele to open, A. S. Cambridge Limited - Hardware & Building supplies at 100 East Street in Kingston, Jamaica in the mid 1950s.
A.S. Cambridge supplied the building materials that helped Jamaica grow, maintain, and recover from many hurricanes. From his biggest clients buying for the most intoxicating tourist resorts to the dirty, shoe less man walking in from the streets Mr. Cambridge treated everyone with grace and dignity. Many of his workers stayed with him for decades.
Al was handsome, smart, kind, was loved and respected by those who knew and worked with him. Mr. Cambridge had the most delightfully peaceful personality. He was never one to let the grass grow under his feet. And, he was a leader of Men. He had the patience of Job. His courage kept his family safe through violence and political turmoil.
Alves was a great and stoic Man. It is important that his memory and accomplishments be remembered. Al had impeccable work ethic rising before dawn, six days a week, to open his hardware store and build Jamaica. Through two fires that destroyed his business he persevered and rebuilt to the mantra that you can destroy the tree but the roots remain untouched.
Alves loved to travel. After he retired, he took many cruising adventures with his close friends. On his last cruise, which lasted 4 months, he and Yvonne went around the World. They loved dressing up and having dinner with the Captain of the ship.
Al would want you to know that he was a Free Mason. And visited many lodges around the World on his travels. He was also President of the Jockey Club for a time.
Alves had a great and rewarding life, full of trials and tribulations, and many great successes. He remained caring and generous throughout. Heaven has a great Man in attendance tonight. Here on Earth there is no replacing all he brought to life. He is much beloved and so very missed.
