Antonio I Prats

In Loving Memory of Antonio I. Prats, MD, FACS July 31, 1924 – May 8, 2015 On the morning of May 8, 2015, Antonio I. Prats, MD passed away peacefully in his home and in the company of his loving wife of almost 63 years, Violeta T. Prats, MD. He will be dearly missed by his wife, daughter, Maria Prats Hamilton, Esquire, son, Antonio R. Prats, MD, son-in-law, Richard Allen Hamilton, PhD, grandchildren, Richard Ashley Hamilton, Christopher Ryan Hamilton, Lauren Prats Porras, MD, Megan Alyssa Prats, Jennifer Amanda Prats and Christin Alexandra Prats, great-granchildren, Maxwell Kellan Hamilton and Benjamin Richard Hamilton, and feline companion, Rover. Antonio was born in La Coruna, Spain, the only child of Antonio Prats Llobregat and Dolores Canalejo. As an infant, Antonio’s family relocated to Cuba, where he soon excelled in his studies. He graduated with a Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical School of the University of Havana in 1948, and subsequently served as a Captain in the Cuban Army as a physician. In 1960, Antonio and his wife and two young children, pursuing a life of freedom, relocated to the United States. Settling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and board certified in Neurological Surgery, Antonio continued his practice at Temple University, serving also as Associate Professor. He later established his private practice and relocated to the Miami area in 1975, where he continued his neurosurgical career until his retirement in 1988. A true patriot dedicated to his adoptive homeland, America, Antonio was a staunch proponent of education and financed the studies of many a devoted and grateful student. He was an avid reader, ardent traveler, and well versed in a variety of disciplines. His smile lifted many heavy hearts, and his talents saved many fortunate enough to fall into his gifted and skilled hands. May the good Lord hold him in the palm of His hand.
