Aloha Aunt Daphne, I have so many fond memories of my brother & I spending time on school holidays with The Hugh family, in MoBay and going to Doctors Cave. Roger and Sandy you were wee ones then. I’m glad I got to see Aunt Daphne on my last trip to FL a few years ago. Rest In Peace and Love.

What I loved most about Popo was her contagious laughter and her indulgence/participation with her grandchildren when we wanted to be silly (more so when we were adults vs children!).  I will always remember her having snacks/candies in her chest of drawers at her house, and it always had a few dollars in there for me when the ice cream truck would drive by in her neighborhood. She helped raise me to be the woman I am today and I hope my baby girl will inherit the same strength and character Popo had.

There are so many great memories, it’s hard to choose a favorite. What I can say though is that I was lucky enough to be welcomed into the Chin family as the “unofficially adopted” son. So naturally, all of Meghann’s aunts, uncles, and cousins became my aunts, uncles, and cousins, and of course their Popo, became my Popo (I can’t believe I just learned her real name! Lol). Over the years I was blessed to be able to share many birthdays, family dinners, holidays, and family traditions. Popo treated me as though I was her grandson by blood, and along with the rest of the family she always made me feel welcome. Though she was petite in stature, her presence was always felt. I enjoyed listening to her speak, and she had the cutest chuckle. I was always amazed at how strong  Popo was, and let’s be honest...she did not look her actual age! Hopefully by some miracle I too inherited those genes!  This isn’t goodbye, just see you later. Rest In Peace Popo until we meet again on the other side ❤️

Aunt Daphne has been a constant presence in my life, even though we lived so far away from each other.  In early childhood, my brother James and I waited with excitement for the heavy parcel from Jamaica that would arrive in late November.  Inside the brown paper wrapping was a battered silver tin…and inside the tin…a Jamaican rum cake!  The tin would carry on smelling of rum for months after the cake was gone.  How kind of Aunt Daphne to think of us every year and go to all the trouble of ordering the cake, packing it up and posting it to us.  
In 1972, we had a wonderful holiday, staying at Aunt Daphne and Uncle Hubert’s house in Montego Bay.  The day after we arrived was my 6th birthday.  Aunt Daphne organised a lovely celebration meal for me ...including Jamaican patties!  She had thoughtfully ordered special less-spicy ones for kids.  Every time I’ve had a pattie since, I think so fondly of that holiday with Aunt Daphne, Uncle Hubert, Sandy and Roger.
My Mum (Joan) and Aunt Chris often reminisce about ‘ Jaj’.  She was their brave big sister who fought many of their battles for them and looked out for them when Mom and Pop were busy.  Aunt Chris remembers Jaj, coming home from her first term at Hampton, weeping.  Apparently some of the other girls had informed Aunt Daphne, that they didn’t want Chinese girls at their school.  However, Aunt Daphne soldiered on and went on to gain friendship and acceptance at Hampton, both for herself, her 4 sisters who followed, and many other non-white girls who subsequently enjoyed going to the school.
Even in her later years, Aunt Daphne had a way of making me feel special when I visited.  She would always give me a little memento, or some money to spend on my trip.  I still have a nice pair of running shoes that she helped me buy!  It’s sad that, in these times of COVID-19, we couldn’t get across to Miami, to see Aunt Daphne off properly.  She is in my happy memories forever.


Sandy, Roger and family:

We are very sorry for your loss. Miss Daphne was an amazingly sweet and generous woman.  As Madison says, " she always had a big welcoming smile whenever we visited her."  Lucas says, "I love being her little fatso!"

She was a great friend to our mother -- Gladys Chin...and for that we are very thankful. Our kids include Miss Daphne in their nightly prayers. Gladys Chin will never forget her bestie and neither will we!

We are so sorry to hear of your mom's passing.  

We were very happy to have been able to spend some time with her at the Palace.  Both her and my mom's face lit up each time they saw each other.  And her grapes; how she loved her grapes :-)

To the Chin and Hugh Family:
I am cousin Susie. I am so sorry to hear of Tie Goo’s passing but it’s happy and good to know that she is with our dad, Austin and parents.
My sister Debbie and I use to visit Tie Goo and family for the summers, when we were little in Montego Bay. It was quite an adventurous journey as we lived in Kinston.
I remember that we four kids had the privilege of being taken to the beach every day at 8:00 and being picked up at 5:00 on the way home from work. It was so much fun swimming, socializing and of course looking for all the beautiful seashells. 
I also have great memories of the whole family having lunch at our grandparents house on top of the grocery store. The very very best Chinese food ever. 
Tie goo gave Debbie and I set of Colgate dolls from all the different countries, they were beautiful and we really enjoyed playing with them. 
Oh and I can’t forget her delicious banana cake, excellent and moist .


I never got to try any of popo's great cooking but if it's anything like Sandy's then it's truly amazing. Popo was sweet, kind and very caring. I have known the Chin family for 19 years now and whenever she was over or we visited she was in VERY HIGH spirits. May all of these positive memories bring the whole family peace. 🙏🏽

Jaj, you were prim and proper in appearance, not a hair out of place, and organized in all other aspects. I remember how cluttered your suite seemed with boxes, cupboards and drawers and wondered how you could find anything but one only had to ask for some document/letter/photo and you knew exactly which drawer it was in. 

Above all, Jaj, you were kind. It was you who chose to look after your parents all their lives, releasing your siblings of this burden.  You saw to the needs of your husband, Hubie, until he too passed away.  When Uncle Austin retired, you opened your home to him.  You always welcomed visiting siblings who came from afar, year after year, to visit their aged parents and you provided for us well. 

In closing, Jaj, I want to commend you on bringing up two caring, bright and successful children, Roger and Sandy. I could see how much you loved them and how proud you were of them, though in the old Chinese fashion, you hardly showed it.  I believe they both have inherited some of your traits.

Dear Jaj,
Before I married your brother, Clinton, I wondered why you had never gone to university like your siblings and it dawned on me that if you had, then none of the others would have had the opportunity and funds to further their education.  It was you that stayed and helped your father run the business that supported the entire family - you were the mainstay of the family. 

Throughout your life it was you that your younger siblings called upon whenever they had financial problems abroad and at home.  Though the funds you sent may not have been yours, you were the instrument through which it flowed.  I remember when Clin needed cash to start the hardware business, it was you he asked to send the proceeds from his insurance policy in Jamaica to do so.

You were the one whom we came to for advice – you were lovingly called "Jaj" by us - short for AhJiah (big sister) and we looked upon you as such.  When Clin completed his doctorate in Oxford and was considering returning to the University in Jamaica, your advice was to go elsewhere as Jamaica in 1965 was beginning to show signs of turmoil. We took your advice and ended up in Edmonton, Canada.

Jaj, you had a stern demeanor and at first I was a trifle afraid of you - as we grew older together, I found you had a great sense of humour and we shared many nonsense jokes of people we knew from our past.  You were fourteen years older than I and having lived in Montego Bay all your life, you knew many people (old and young) and a lot of gossip, many off colour, were exchanged between us on my visits to Miami.

Enid, Clinton, Hubie, Daphne - July 1, 1962

There are soooo many fond memories I have of my dear Godmother. She was so very kind, generous and soft-spoken. We were neighbours in Jamaica and only an empty lot separated our houses. I always wondered why no one ever bought the plot of land and it was only a few years ago when she visited us (Mummy, Aunt Lily and I) that she told me she owned it.  Wow! All these years I never knew. Sometimes when I could not go to the house I would push my hands through my bedroom window and wave hoping for her to see me over the cows grazing on the plot of land.  Somehow as a little girl I always thought that was fun.
Once when Sandy had Chicken Pox she allowed me to spend the night just so I could catch it. According to my Mother it was planned so that I could catch it too and be over it the same time as Sandy.  I never did get it!
I remember going to the shop and, being young, was intrigued with everything I saw (and touched!). She was the only one I ever knew that owned a business and I felt special to be able to go there with Sandy.
I also cannot forget her famous Chop Suey. As they would say today "it was to die for".  I have NEVER had another Chop Suey as good as hers.  She told me how to make it and no matter how hard I try I have never been able to perfect it. Now, on the rare occasions when I do order it from restaurants, I taste it and think what a waste of my money, this cannot compare to hers. 
I never saw much of her after she migrated to Miami but then I moved here as well and sometimes Sandy and Dawn would bring her by to visit. 
 I  loved talking with her.  Her conversations were never boring and I learnt something new everytime.  It always felt like we had never been apart.  I did not see her as often as I would have wanted but the memories of her will always remain in my heart. They will never die!  I look foward to seeing her again in Heaven. O what a joy it will be do be reunited with all the loved ones that have gone before. May she rest in perpetual peace!

Mandison and I send our love and condolences to Sandy, Bruce and the Hugh family. Believe me, it still came as a surprise to hear of Daphne's passing. 
 Daphne has always been in our lives..from MoBay days,  where as a child I would pass or enter  James A Chin store and see her, (so business -like)  and her bespectacled  Hubie,  laughing;   both working - a  modern family in the old world.
Daphne became our friends on our many visits to Miami, where we stayed with Bruce,Sandy & Meghann.  She was a wonderful and colourful raconteur bringing back memories of the old times when she was young, full of hopes and so vibrant.
One of her favourite was how she was at the Chinese Club dancing, when she remarked that her eyes were  twitching  and  
 a friend suggested that they buy a 'Pick a Peow' ticket.  Lo and Behold, the next day, she  (and all of MoBay), learnt they were the Grand Prize Winners!  With her share of the prize money she was able to buy her first home- but not before a well known business man approached her and asked to borrow all of it! Her first seemingly reckless act- she lent it - and was repaid in due course with ample interest! 
She  proudly  mentioned how brave Sandy was , when an attacker armed with a knife held them hostage....
So many stories  of the people and incidents in her early life that spanned  almost a century.
Rest in Peace, dear Daphne, you will always be a part of our lives.

Some memories I have of Mummy (in no particular order):
- quiet and reserved, definitely looking to avoid the limelight,
-  very neat and detailed oriented (I think I inherited this trait, for sure).  Some of the notebooks and exercise books she kept for years that had copious notes on a wide array of subjects would lead one to think that she had too much time on her hands!!  
- devoted Mom that pretty much provided all of the wants of her children, as long as they were affordable and within reason.  This generosity ultimately was showered upon the grandchildren as well and in return the 3 of them were very devoted to their PoPo.  Mummy's only great granddaughter was around long enough for Mummy to make the casual observation that she was "smarter" than the grandkids were at the same age (it seems that each new generation took added importance in Mummy's eyes)
- was definitely proud that my sister and me chose professional careers and not the shop life that consumed a significant portion of her own.  The fact that the grandkids also chose successful  professional careers gave her a big "swell head".  In the later years at the nursing home, she asked me on more than one occasion what I was doing.  When I said I was retired she told me that I should go back to school or get a job; " Jus caan do nuttin"
- Mummy was not the greatest of cooks but in Jamaica, she had 2 signature dishes (chop suey and pork chops) that the neighbors looked forward to whenever we would have dinners or get togethers.
- Very devoted to her Mom & Pop in life and even after they were gone.  At the Nursing home she would often tell me that she heard voices (especially Mom's ) but could never see them, so she would ask me to go take a look!!  

RIP Mummy and I know you'll find Mom/Pop, Daddy and Uncle Austin real soon.

Ms. Daphne has been apart of my life since I was a young child. She was my grandma’s (Gladys) bestfriend. They would talk on the phone for hours on end. When I was in town visiting the 3 of us would go out for dim sum and have a great time. She was a wonderful woman and will be deeply missed. 

Hampton girls like Mrs Daphne Chin Hugh (1938- 1942) were,  and will always remain icons, to those of us who attended that school because kinship and respect across the generations was ingrained in us. 

After news of Mrs Hugh’s passing was shared with Hamptonians around the world, condolences and reactions were swift. We learned that she was extremely popular at school, that she became the matriarch of her family, and that she was considered a member of the great generation. 

Her treasured memories and mementos of that time will always be held dear by her daughter-in-law Dawn, and other Hamptonians who may be fortunate to share them. 

May she rest in peace.

Mrs Hugh, Aunt Daphne was a kind and giving person. She welcomed me to her home, saving me from the boredom of boarding school weekends. When she found out I collected match boxes she gave me her entire collection. Again, when she was moving homes to live with Sandy , she packed me a box of silverware which are treasured and still in use. And how can I forget her pork chops, yummy! These are few memories that will forever live on with me.

Dear Family and Friends,
My childhood memories are filled gratitude for yearly visits to Mo Bay where Tie Goo was generous enough to let my sister and me stay with her for the entire summer.  I enjoyed those visits because I got to spend all day, every day at my favorite place on Earth, Doctor's Cave Beach.  Tie Goo also made the best banana cake I had ever had, yum, yum.
After not seeing her for a long while, I'm so happy my family took a trip to Miami in 2018 where we were very fortunate to celebrate a birthday with her.  
Tie Goo was much loved and well cared for by her devoted family. 
 
Tie Goo, give my love to your 'tin.  I can well imagine your joyful reunion with him and Mom and Pop.

Growing up I always heard “yu juss like yu fadder, yu tek after yu fadder”, but my Mom and shared Things such as the love of cross- stitching, reading and collecting miniatures and cute things!! Towards the end she constantly asked for her Mom and Pop, and occasionally Hubie😂. Well Mummy,  you have finally found Mom and Pop.  Oh, and my Dad, who once, many moons ago, wrote to you 
“Knowing you love me, I can do
All that we dream of, I and you

All that you wish and Hope for me.”

We are so sorry to hear of Aunt Daphne’s passing but reassuring to know she died peacefully. We have such fond memories of summers in Montego Bay. How she did it with all us teenagers there was amazing . We are happy to know that she was surrounded by all who loved her.
