I remember meeting Don when he was the internal auditor for the University around 1974.  Shortly after, I met Juanita, Catherine and Jolie and became Uncle Rick to them. 

We developed a friendship that lasted for many years.  One of our favorite things to do was going to Monte's Conch in the Grove and having a beer and conch fritters.   

Bike riding, sailing, canal fishing were all good times that we enjoyed.   Don was a good sport as canal fishing didn't interest him.  

Another time a group from his office loaded their bicycles onto the bed of my pick-up truck, and we bicycled around Key West for the weekend.  

Prior to my NJ move in 1976, we worked on  an unusual project.  We sewed a cover using Juanita's sewing machine for my wife's horse trailer.   It turned out amazingly well.

One of my funniest memories is when I made a batch of beer, and it tasted terrible.  You couldn't tell it wasn't Regal beer to look at the bottle other than the gold caps I used, as the labels were still attached.  

I must have aged that beer for two years hoping the flavor would change but no luck.   During my move to NJ, I still couldn't throw it away, so I gave two six packs to Don with my warning about taste.  They stayed  in his refrigerator until one hot, Sunday afternoon, an alcoholic neighbor asked if Don had any beer.  The neighbor had already finished all his own beers while sitting in the sun.  

When Don served  a bottle with my special brew, the neighbor promptly spit it out.  Oh no!  It failed a final test.  At that point, Don took the six packs and placed them in his trash can.  On Monday, Don happened to be looking out the window as the trash men opened the can, looked around and slid the two six packs into their truck.  I think they'll be more careful about what they scavenge in the future.

Those are some of my great memories.  He will be missed.

Uncle Donny is one of the few people on this planet that really knows me. He was a inspiration and taught me everything from manners to how to swim. He challenged me academically and physically as a youngster and I am the person I am today because he took the time and effort to lead me.
