On Monday, January 6, 2025, Ibis Mas, loving mother to four children passed away at the age of 100. Ibis was born to Librada Padrón Gil and Oscar Gil in Banes, a municipality and city in the Holguín Province of Cuba on February 10, 1924. She was the eldest of two daughters, her younger sister, Margarita Gil. Ibis left Cuba to begin a new life in the United States of America, more specifically New York City, New York with her Aunt, Marina Padrón. She studied English and other courses for a time and began working for a button factory. On a day out with her girlfriends at a fair, she met her future husband, Mario Mas. After a short courtship of 5 months, they wed on September 2, 1950. Ibis and Mario had four children together, Mario, Anthony, Ricardo, and Roxana born in New York City and together later moved to Miami. In addition to being a mother, Ibis worked for Bell Atlantic in New York and Bell South in Miami until she retired after 20 years in 1986. She became a widow at the age of 52 when Mario passed away on November 6, 1976. She loved to quietly read most days and grew to love spending time at the adult center playing bingo with the many friends she had formed there. She was opinionated, strong-willed, funny and did things her way. All endearing qualities to those who loved her, which were many. Ibis was steadfast and strong in raising her family alone and giving them the love and support they needed. Her love for her family and friends was deep and sincere. Her children were everything to her and her family adored her. She enjoyed life to the fullest. Ibis is survived by her loving children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, wonderful son-in-law, and daughters-in-law. God blessed her with 100 amazing years. An honor well deserved. May she rest in eternal peace.
