Mireya Cardona Sires Valls

Nació el 2 de abril de 1933 en Santiago de Cuba, Oriente, Cuba, hija de Antonio Cardona y Juana Sires Barroso. Estuvo un hermano mayor, Reynaldo Cardona Sires, fallecido. Un interés en la escritura condujo a un doctorado en Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Oriente. Se casó con Valentin Valls Rameri poco después de graduarse en 1959 y tuvo dos hijos: Mireya Maria y Valentin.

Después de la Revolución Cubana, emigró con su familia a Miami en 1967. Aquí obtuvo una licenciatura en educación mientras trabajaba en múltiples trabajos. Luego enseñó español y programas especiales durante más de 30 años en el Sistema de Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Dade. Viudo en 2012 después de 53 años de matrimonio.

Mireya tenía muchas pasiones: el baile, la música y opera, la cocina y el cine, todo lo cual duró hasta el final. Su coraje, generosidad, ingenio agudo y honestidad vivirán en los recuerdos de todos sus conocidos.

Le sobreviven sus dos hijos, su nieto Daniel, sus sobrinos Reynaldo y Juan, y sus descendientes.

Mireya Cardona Sires Valls, 87, died on Friday, June 12th, 2020 of heart failure following surgery.

Born on April 2nd, 1933 in Santiago de Cuba, Oriente, Cuba to Antonio Cardona and Juana Sires Barroso along with an older brother—Reynaldo Cardona Sires, deceased. An early interest in writing lead to a PhD in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Oriente.

She married Valentin Valls Rameri shortly after graduating in 1959 and had two children: Mireya Maria and Valentin.

After the Cuban Revolution, she emigrated with her family to Miami in 1967. Here she earned a BA in Education while working multiple jobs. She then taught Spanish and Special Programs for more than 30 years in the Dade County Public School System. Widowed in 2012 after 53 years of marriage.

Mireya had many passions: for dancing, music and opera, cooking, and the movies, all of which lasted till the end. Her courage, generosity, sharp wit, and honesty will live on in the memories of everyone she knew.

Survived by her two children, grandson Daniel, nephews Reynaldo and Juan, and their descendants.

Funeral at Caballero Rivero Sunset Sunday June 21st at 4-8 P.M. Mass at Church of the Little Flower Monday June 22nd at 11 A.M. Burial at Miami Memorial Park the same day at 12:15 P.M.
