Mr. Peter Clayton was born on May 3, 1936 to the union of Nehemiah and Icyline Clayton in the district of Glengoffe, St Catherine, Jamaica. Peter, affectionately called Benji, moved to Kingston to live and further his ambitions at the age of 15. Life eventually took him to England and the States where he lived and worked for many years before returning home to Jamaica to settle with wife Patrichia and raise their children. Benji, Uncle Benji, Mr. Petah, Mr. P and to his children “daddy” is known for his strong and witty personality. He was loud and outspoken, very much the charmer, and never one to beat around the bush as Jamaicans would say. He was quick tempered and comical without trying, a true penny-pincher, but without a doubt he had a big heart and touched the lives of many. He was a good storyteller, a lover of music and a dancer, a God fearing and no-nonsense man at times, and always a lover of food. When all is said and done, he was a complex man who was the rock and joy of his family and community.
He rose from humble beginnings and was always ambitious as he sought out to make a life for himself and his family. He was a jack of all trades as he took on cabinet making, welding, professional painting, taxi, and mini-bus operations. He was an entrepreneur and managed several successful businesses throughout his life, such as block making, bar operations, wholesale and retail grocery store, real estate among others. He was a stickler for discipline when it came to his children. As Jamaicans would say they were house rats as he kept them close and sheltered from the perils of this world as much as he could. Peter was a hard-working dedicated family man. His kids were expected to contribute to the family business, but he kept them well rounded with his passion for education and cultured activities, as he tried to give them more opportunities than he had growing up.
