Sue Lan Chin (née Kong) was the third child and only daughter of three children of William Kong Fung (aka Kong Fung) and Inez Kong Fung (aka Tsai See) born in the village of Yu-Gam-Po, Fenggang District, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, China on November 4th, 1939. Sue Lan was a descendant of the Hakka people just north of Shenzhen city in southeast China. She often spoke fondly of enjoying the cooler days high in the hills near her village.
In the late 1950’s, Sue Lan was part of the Hakka diaspora who emigrated from southeast China to Kingston, Jamaica where she helped her parents with their business ventures. Shortly after moving to Kingston, she met and married Joseph Chin (deceased 1988) on November 19th, 1961. Together they owned and ran a couple of grocery and meat shops and had three children. In 1974, the entire family was part of another diaspora, this time of Chinese Jamaicans escaping the mounting violence in Jamaica and immigrated to Miami, Florida, USA to begin a new life.
Sue Lan was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her greatest joys were spending time with her grandchildren and children, traveling, arts and crafts, and trying different foods, especially baked goods and chocolate. Aside from watching travel television shows, she loved to watch nature documentaries and had a fondness for birds.
She emphasized education to her children and grandchildren as a way to a better life and she enjoyed reading Chinese language newpapers to stay abreast of current events.
After dealing with many health issues over the last ten years, Sue Lan passed away peacefully of natural causes surrounded by her family in the early morning of October 11th, 2022, in the care of Baptist Health South Florida in Miami, Florida. Sue Lan was 82 years old.
Sue Lan is survived by her three children: Corinne Chin, Calvin Chin, Cecilia Chin-Pallés (m. Aldo Pallés), and her two grandchildren: Alexander Pallés and Christina Pallés.
