1929 – 2024
In loving memory of Zenaida Becerra, born June 5, 1929, wife, beloved Tia and Godmother, esteemed teacher, and friend to many, who passed away on April 24, 2024. Zenaida is survived by her brothers Luis and Sixto Gonzalez, her loving nieces and nephews Lorraine, Martha, Tony and Jimmy, and her grand nieces and nephews P.J., Nora, Melissa, Anthony, Erica, and Andrew.
Zenaida was born in Jaguey Grande, Cuba, but left the island in 1961 after Fidel Castro came to power.
In 1967, she married the love of her life Pedro Becerra, who also escaped communism in Cuba by moving to Miami. One of their great passions was traveling. They enjoyed nearly twenty wonderful years of marriage until Pedro, a/k/a Tio, passed away in 1986. Zenaida was an expert seamstress and trained on commercial sewing machines. She was approached to teach vocational education classes on commercial sewing. In order to obtain the necessary education certificates, she enrolled in and took the necessary classes at Lindsay Hopkins Technical College, as well as Florida International University. She was hired by Miami Dade Public Schools and taught commercial sewing at The English Center in the heart of Miami for over 25 years. Several generations of folks coming from Latin America and the Caribbean learned from Zenaida and were able to obtain employment in clothing factories in South Florida and elsewhere. Many of them referred to her as “La Profesora”. In her spare time, Tia loved spending time with family.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at Caballero Rivero Little Havana Funeral Home, 3344 S.W. 8th Street, Miami.
