He was a 1947 graduate of Carlisle High School. During high school, he was on the track team as a high jumper, and the Carlisle championship basketball team. During his senior year, while working delivering ice blocks, Dick met his future wife, Wanda May Korn, at her family’s business Korn’s Korner in Miamisburg. They spent time roller skating and swimming at Camp Chautauqua, as well as bowling and family auto racing. Dick was dedicated to the family auto race team, which included father-in-law Harold “Red” Korn, brother-in-law Robert “Bobby” Korn, and nephew Little Bobby Korn.
He was drafted in the Army January 11, 1952 where he boarded a charter bus in Lebanon, OH to serve during the Korean War. Dick was honorably discharged December 18, 1953. He worked at Frigidaire, Harrison Radiator, and retired in 1992 from General Motors after a 43 year career as a Heliarc welder. As a young man, he worked the 60+ acres of the family farm on Martz Paulin Road in Carlisle, and helped manage his mom and dad’s Buck’s Marathon gas station at Twin Creek.
Dick was known for his dedication to work where he took only one day of vacation during his 43 years to see his daughter off on her first airplane flight for her new job. He was also known for his honesty, his devotion to his beloved wife and daughter, his only grandson, and his three great grandchildren.
Dick is survived by his daughter, Lee Ann Atkinson; grandson, Tyler Atkinson and his father, Steve Atkinson; great grandchildren, Kyndal, Quinn, and Cru Atkinson, and their mother, Madalyn, Gianna Atkinson and her mother Jashonda Miller; nieces and nephews, Kenny Joe Schuchter and his wife Dodie Schuchter, John Ridge and his wife Jennifer Ridge, Robin Korn, David Eastridge, and Doug Eastridge; great nieces, Christine Garrett and her husband Guy Garrett, Katherine Saathoff and her husband Mike Saathoff, Tiffany Minton and her husband Travis Minton, Olivia Ridge, and Hannah Ridge; great nephews, Joey Schuchter, Kyle Schuchter and his wife Kirby Schuchter, Connor Ridge and his wife Nicole Ridge, Christian Ridge, Cameron Ridge, and Gary Korn; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 73 years, Wanda May Hamlin; parents, Orville “Buck” Hamlin and Mildred (Dickey) Hamlin; siblings, Glen Hamlin, Margaret Ann (Hamlin) Schuchter, and Shirlee (Hamlin) Ridge; brother-in-law, Robert “Bobby” Korn; sister-in-law, Nancy Eastridge; brother-in-law, Banner Eastridge; nieces, Peggy (Hamlin) Hermetz and Angela Roosa; great niece, Victoria Smith; and great nephew, Bobby Korn.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 12 – 1 PM on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at GEBHART-SCHMIDT-PARRAMORE Funeral Home, Miamisburg. A funeral service will follow at 1 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Hillgrove Cemetery, Miamisburg. Everyone in attendance is invited back to the funeral home for food and fellowship.
