Saturday, January 24, 2026. He was born on January 14, 1944,
the son of Lewis and Betty (Lieberman).
Michael was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He grew
up in the small town of Milford, Illinois. He was a graduate of the
University of Missouri at Rolla, earning a degree in Metallurgical
Engineering. He later earned masters degrees in materials
science and business administration from the University of
Dayton. After graduation from U. Of M., he was employed as a
welding development engineer at Mound Lab in Miamisburg, Ohio
from 1967 to 1974. He then accepted a position at the Y-12 Plant
in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, working there from 1974 to 1981. In
1981, he returned to Mound Lab until retirement. After retirement
from Mound and needing something to do with his time, he
worked another 4 years at Aeronca in Middletown.
After retirement, Michael enjoyed many hobbies. He was an avid
stamp collector and vegetable gardener. His interest in nature led
to taking coursework to become an Ohio Certified Volunteer
Naturalist. He encouraged Marge to do the same, and together
they led nature programs for several years for Five Rivers
MetroParks in Montgomery County. In addition, they conducted a
weekly butterfly survey for the Ohio Lepidopterists Association. As
a couple, they also became dedicated walkers, and through the
American Volkssport Association, completed sponsored walks in
all 50 states, 7 Canadian provinces, and even a couple in
Australia. Michael served for several years as president of the
local Bulls Run Ramblers walking club.
Michael is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margery Perkins;
daughter, Katherine (Mark) Mantel; grandchildren, Edward Mantel
and Margery Mantel; brothers, Richard (Cheryl) Perkins and
