Paul worked for many years as an Analytical Research Chemist at Monsanto, Inc. and later for AK Steel. He was an avid learner, constant reader, always up for a philosophical conversation, and friend to many. Passionate about soccer, he spent many years coaching, playing, and refereeing. He also enjoyed learning the German language, skiing, sailing, and flying. He was known for his endless supply of bad jokes, broad knowledge of a bevy of topics, and dry sense of humor.
Paul was a long-time member of the former Trenton Lion’s Club, active participant at First Baptist Church, member of the Dead Philosophers Book Club, and deeply committed to his family. Throughout his lifetime he served in a wide range of volunteer roles for his church and other organizations.
In addition to his parents, Paul is preceded in death by his sister, Vivian (Back) Derickson, and brother-in-law, Donald Derickson.
Paul is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean (Guesman) Back, daughters Kristin (Christopher) Spence, Cynthia (Lawrence) Yakich, and Theresa (Christopher) Fleck, and grandchildren Faith Spence, Hope Spence, Olivia Yakich, Samuel Yakich, Caleb Fleck and Micah Fleck. Paul was also very close to his nephews Dan (Sandy) Derickson, Stan (Patti) Derickson, and niece Suzanne (Michel) DeCamp, and their children.
Visitation will be from 10 am – 12 pm on Monday, August 5, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Middletown, 4500 Riverview Avenue, Middletown, OH 45042. A funeral service will follow at 12 pm with Pastor Scotty Robertson officiating. Private burial will be held at Woodside Cemetery.
