June 18th, 1939-June 28th, 2023
Troy was born June 18th, 1939, in Dewdrop Kentucky, the oldest of seven boys, to parents Troy Flannery Sr., and Virginia S. (Leach) Flannery. A loving son, and brother. He spent early life deep in the hills of Kentucky, after his parents moved the family out to a farm, where they grew tobacco.
From 1956-1959, Troy proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp., and his experience in the Marines was something he carried with him the rest of his days, and deeply enjoyed sharing this with anyone who would ask, or visit. While working in Florida, after his military service, Troy met the love of his life, Mary Ann. On December 2nd, 1960, they were married, at first residing in Florida, before ultimately coming to call Ohio home. Troy and Mary purchased a modest home south of Dayton in 1971, and year after year, planted a large garden. He loved to grow corn, onions, beans and tomatoes. He worked many jobs during his lifetime, from being a proud Marine, to blowing high walls at a rock quarry in Florida, a rock truck driver, and finally, for 25 years until he retired, a diesel mechanic at Air Products of Middletown, Ohio.
He was an enduring man, and made it to work even during the blizzard of 1978. His dedication in life made him a legend--at least to all of us.
Though a Christian his whole life, he attended a service which laid on his heart a desire to be saved and born again, in 1983. From this point, he became very involved with the church. At first at Faith Chapel, and later, Stratford Heights Church of God in Middletown, where he and Mary were long time members of the congregation, and which for a time, he served too, as an usher. Troy retired from Air Products in 1998, and spent this time dabbling in projects he enjoyed, like workworking, traveling with Mary Ann, church, the thrift store, and gardening. He loved so much to socialize with other congregants at church, often much after service was over. Other things he deeply enjoyed, included fishing, hunting deer, playing his guitar or his banjo in his chair in the living room for all of us, reading in the bible, and spending his time with family and loved ones.
Troy is survived by three brothers, Johnny (Sherry) Flannery, Harry (Cathy) Flannery, and Dennis (Marietta) Flannery, as well as three daughters, Annette (Steve) Gannon, Karen Lawrence, Marcia (Gilbert) Clements, and son, Kevin T. (Ellen) Flannery; four grandchildren, Jennifer Gannon, Joshua Gannon, Mason T. Flannery, and Kayla Flannery. As well as many nieces, nephews, and beloved kin and friends.
One thing can be said with certainty, and that is that Troy was a special human being, in that, he never met a stranger. He was so sweet, so loved, and will be missed by us all. Heaven has gained another angel.
