

Courtney Smith, 78, of Midland passed away on October 3, 2015. She was born July 27, 1937 at Medical Arts Hospital in San Antonio, TX, across from the Alamo, to Helene Alberta Hunter and William Henry Shelley. She attended Joseph’s Academy and Highland Park elementary Schools and Poe Junior High through the ninth grade.
She moved to Fort Worth, TX in 1952 where she attended Diamond Jarvis High school where she won many awards for her typing skills and the “Who’s Who JT” award for business in her senior year. After high school, Courtney worked for Convair for a year while she attended college at Arlington State. She won no awards during college but had much fun.
She met Dalton Jay Smith though the drag racing association on Fort Worth. They married in March 23, 1959. They began their family in Fort Worth. In November 1961, Courtney and Jay moved to Houston, TX where they both worked for Transcontinental Pipeline. Courtney was a secretary for several different departments.
In August 1975, Courtney and Jay moved to Midland, TX. Courtney continued her work in the oil and gas industry as a Lease Analyst until her retirement from Burlington Resources in March of 2004. Courtney continued her work from home assisting her husband Jay until they both fully retired.
One of her greatest moments in life was standing at the end of a rainbow with her young family looking at all of the colors on her skin.
Her mother Helene, her father William and her sister Dixie precede Courtney in death.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jay Smith; her children, Steven Eric Smith, Shelley Lynne Hollums and husband Eddy, Joel David Smith and his wife Kim and Clayton Jay Smith and his wife Susan; 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Ellis Funeral Home. There will be a Graveside Service at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Resthaven Memorial Park, with Brother Bob Porterfield officiating.
Pallbearers will be Clay Smith, Eric Smith, Joel Smith, Eddy Hollums, Dalton Smith, and Todd Strickland.
