

He was a WWII veteran and served in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan.
Flake graduated from Texas Tech University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Dairy Management. He received the Borden Scholarship Award, made the Presidents Honor Roll, and was featured in the Who’s Who in College and University.
Flake began his career in the oil business learning from his father-in-law, J. P. (Bum) Gibbins. He was the owner of Flake Tompkins Tubular Services of Midland. During Flake’s lifetime he was also a rancher and realtor. He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, a member and judge of the Cutting Horse Association, the President of the Midland/Odessa Rodeo Association, and a member of the Midland Shriners Club.
Flake was preceded in death by both of his parents, Flake H. Tompkins, Sr., and Mary Letha Gray, sister, Mary Dee Tompkins LaVere, and first wife, Frances Gibbins Tompkins.
Survivors include his sons, Flake Gib Tompkins and wife, Patrice of Portales, NM; Joseph Dogan Tompkins and wife, Myriam of Ft. Sumner, NM; and daughters, Angela Tompkins Stengl and husband, Burgess of Spring, TX; Tami Tompkins Morgan of Midland, TX; and Kae Tompkins Eichler of Humble, TX. Other survivors include his former wife, Doris Tompkins, his grandchildren, Ashley Tompkins Rogers, David Tompkins, Trisha Tompkins, Francesca Tompkins, Shara Stengl Turner, Susan Stengl Salamanca, Kyle Stengl, Michael Eichler, Matthew Eichler, Megan Eichler, Sasha Tompkins West, Jorome Tompkins, Grace Tompkins, Samantha Tompkins Villa, Jimmy Lucero, and great grandchildren, Kale Turner, Kolbie Turner, Ethan Salamanca, Khloe West, and Alexandra West.
Family will welcome friends at Ellis Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Funeral services will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be: Gib Tompkins, Joe Tompkins, Burgess Stengl, David Tompkins, Jorome Tompkins, Eric Turner, and Juan Salamanca. Honorary pallbearer will be 1st Lt. Jeffrey Niles Rogers.
