He was preceded in death by his parents, James Calvin “JC” Potter and Flossy Arlene Potter; his brothers Larry and Marvin Potter; two infant siblings Lanell & Jimmy Potter; his sons Terry and Gary Potter; and his great-granddaughter Winona Arreguin.
A native Midlander born on February 24, 1942, Brooks was a devoted husband, proud father, and the world’s best Grandad. He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years, Winona Juanell Potter; his four sons, Patrick Potter, James Potter (Karen), Ronald Potter (Deborah), and Russell Potter (Elisa); seven grandchildren: Elisabeth Arreguin (Austin), Russell Potter Jr. (Erika), Corey Joe Potter (Alanna), James Potter, Sirii Potter, Jonathon Potter (Hannah), and Hannah Potter; and ten great-grandchildren: Russell Potter III, Colt Brooks Potter, Elaine Potter, Leopold Arreguin, Rhaena Arreguin, Ashton Potter, Addison Potter, Mason Potter, John Luke Potter, and Emily Potter. He is also survived by his brothers Keith Potter (LouAnn) and Dan Potter (Marquita).
Brooks loved the Lord and his church family at Kelview Heights Baptist Church. Nothing made him happier than time with his loved ones. His grandkids spent countless joyful days romping around Grandad’s shop, knowing they could always count on him to fix whatever was broken — and to magically produce a butterscotch candy from his pocket when needed.
He had a lifelong passion for anything with wheels. From motorcycles and four-wheelers to Jeeps and RVs, Brooks was always up for an adventure. He and Juanell made wonderful memories together, especially on their many bus trips with Bilbury Tours. They also enjoyed many simple evenings together at home in their chairs, with their beloved dog, Tia.
A hard worker with high standards (and, let’s be honest, a healthy amount of stubbornness and opinions), Brooks spent over 40 years working for various oil companies. Later, he and his brother Dan owned Bo’s RV. At one point, he even had a farm and raised animals. He never really retired from tinkering — there was always something around the house that needed fixing.
Brooks leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, love, and family. While we’ll miss him dearly here on earth, our hope in the Lord fills us with joy knowing a glorious heavenly reunion is coming.
A celebration of life will be held at Kelview Heights Baptist Church on May 9th at 10 a.m.
