Mark was born on December 16, 1951 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Jesse and Lila Roberson. The family moved to Midland in 1954 when his father was transferred with Mobil Oil. He was a proud 1970 graduate of Lee High School where he played football and earned the nickname “Stump” for his unmovable presence on the offensive line. He was a lifelong Rebel fan and season ticket holder.
Earlier in life, Mark worked at Walgreens (the Largest Drugstore in Texas) where he met his wife, as a coffee deliveryman, and in the oil fields as a pump jack inspector. After the downturn in the oil field in the early 1980s, he went to work as a salesman at Sears in Midland Park Mall. He worked at Sears for the next 21 years. Eventually promoted to management, he was a steadfast presence on the sales floor and was loved by so many people at the store for his friendship and mentorship. He is remembered by almost everyone for his rowdy jokes, riddles, and tricks. Mark retired from Sears in 2000. Not ready for full retirement, he went back to work for Standard Coffee delivering coffee to businesses all over West Texas. In 2005 he was diagnosed with MS but continued to work until he could no longer. He spent his remaining time with his family and his grandchildren whom he adored.
In his spare time Mark enjoyed woodworking like his father – he had every Craftsman tool Sears sold. Summers for many, many years were spent with family and friends at Lake Brownwood. Mark was always the first out to fish and the last one back. Cards and dominos were other passions along with days-long Monopoly tournaments with his brothers-in-law over the holidays.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carlene; his children Jamie and her husband Nicholas Cook of La Porte, Texas; son Jeff and his wife Michelle King of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; daughter Aralee Roberson of Midland; grandchildren Stephanie, Jonithan, Joseph, Marell and Aralynn, and one great-grandson Phoenix, who will all miss pancakes with their Pawpaw. He is also survived by his siblings Glenn Roberson of Carlsbad, New Mexico; Elaine and Edwin Sullivan of Southaven, Mississippi; Robby and Wendy Roberson of Midland; Linda Roberson-White of Southlake, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a casual memorial service at Crestview Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 18, 2016. The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of Midland or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Mark’s name.
Arrangements under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, Midland, TX.
