Mildred Lee (Cox) Lester died peacefully at home at the age of 95. She was born in Haskell, OK to Russell and Verna Cox on March 2, 1929, but moved with her family to Midland, Texas as a young girl. She passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024. She was a long-time resident of Midland where she graduated from Midland High School. She married her husband, Gene Lester, on September 4, 1948, and they were married until his passing in January 8, 2018. They started out living in Midland, and then followed his job to Coleman, Big Lake, Rankin, and back to Midland in 1974.
As a young woman, Mildred worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. as an operator. Other jobs included grocery clerk, waitress, and when they moved back to Midland she worked downtown for Hello, Central. Mostly she liked being a homemaker and mom.
She was actively involved in her church. In Midland, she attended Ft Worth and Jax Street Church of Christ. She and Gene were founding members of Fairmont Park Church of Christ. They attended One Hope Church of Christ in later years with their daughter, Stacy. When Gene retired, they volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She was involved with the Children’s ministry at church, teaching class and VBS.
Mildred is survived by her sons, Ken Lester and wife Betty Jean of Fort Worth and Terry Lester and wife Joann of Wimberley; daughter, Stacy Lester of Midland; grandchildren, Kenny Paul Lester of Fort Worth, Kody Mathews and wife Jennifer of Brock, Jade Ogden of Bryan, Emily Kuhstoss and husband Kyle of Cleborne and Will Lester and wife Tracy of Blanco; great grandchildren, Nick Lester, Noah Heinemann, Chloe Heinemann, Jonah Heinemann, Hudson Ogden, Kadyn Mathews, Keira Mathews, Vivian Mathews, Connor Mathews, Hallie Lester, Rory Lester, Evelyn, Kuhstoss and Lillian Kuhstoss; and great-great grandson, Deklan Mathews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Gene Lester; parents, Russel and Verna Cox; and brother, Russell Cox, Jr. and his wife Sandra.
Services were held at Ellis Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Park on Friday, April 5, 2024. Officiant was Scott Sheppard, longtime friend and pastor at One Hope Church of Christ.
