The Celebration of His Life will be Monday, August 28, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church Worship Center in Midland, Texas, officiated by Dr. Darin Wood and Dr. Daniel Vestal.
Phil was born April 18, 1978 in Houston, Texas to Mike Atnipp and Myra Dickson Atnipp.
He graduated from Midland High School in 1996. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Texas Tech University in 2002.
Following graduation, he returned to Midland to begin a career as an independent Petroleum Landman. He worked for a brokerage firm, lawyers, and independent oil companies. Phil worked alongside his dad (Mike) who has MS, which made it difficult for him to stand for long periods of time. Phil became his legs which was a tremendous blessing to Mike.
At age eight, Phillip accepted Jesus as his Savior. As an avid reader, he had read through the Bible. He enjoyed talking about what he had read and learned. Romans 3:22-25 is marked in his Bible: "This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
He had a fondness for various sports, with a special affinity for baseball, having played the game from T-ball through his high school years. Phil's positions of choice were shortstop and second base, and his instinct was to be in motion with every pitch - a trait that wasn't acquired but inherent, (he was always "rocking" left to right, right to left). Coaches were consistently amazed by his rapid assimilation of their guidance, unaware that his aptitude for adaptability stemmed from a natural inclination. Little did they realize that he had been swaying since infancy, even demolishing his crib by rocking himself to sleep at a tender age. We frequently discussed the anecdote around the dinner table.
In 1991, his father, Mike, initiated an annual tradition with Phil and his brothers; a journey to Omaha, Nebraska, to partake in the College World Series. By his estimate, he had been present at well over a hundred games, commemorating each trip with a dedicated T-shirt.
Phil was a quiet man of few words, with a sharp, quick sense of humor, and he enjoyed making himself and others laugh. He was kind, compassionate, and patient, always willing to help others. During Covid, he occasionally shopped for neighbors who could not get out. In return, they brought him food. As a single man, that was a real treat. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors, especially with friends. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his parents Myra and Mike Atnipp; brothers Marc Atnipp and wife, Amy, and their daughters Channing and Ashton of The Woodlands, TX; Stuart Atnipp and wife, Kristen, children Grady, Hugh, and Bessie of Fort Worth, TX; and many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.
Pallbearers are Thomas Atnipp, Will Atnipp, Michael Crawford, Nick Crawford, Jeff Lawson, Rick Lawson, and Ryan Reese.
