Glen Paul Kenney, 60, died on July 29, 2012 in Midlothian, Virginia as a result of an accidental fire at his home. If he were to describe this event in his own words, he would say with a wry smile that his number was up and encourage us to keep moving forward.
Glen was born on February 16, 1952 in New Jersey to Eugene & Cecilia Kenney. He graduated from Ocean Township High School and Ricker College, and was proud of the fact he was the first in his family to graduate from college. He didn’t hesitate to tell anyone that he was proud to have been born and raised in New Jersey, but enjoyed life in Virginia. During extended hospital stays as a young man, he started reading encyclopedias and became a voracious reader not limited by genres, subjects, or topics for the rest of his life. He told his children they could never be bored or lonely with a book in hand. Professionally, he was proud of his service as a Forensic Detective with the Chesterfield County Police Department during the 1980’s and 1990’s, where he investigated countless violent crimes. He enjoyed coaching youth sports and continued to coach long after his children grew up. He was most happy on the beaches of New Jersey, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and watching the successes and achievements of his children. Ever appreciative of music, he won numerous intra-family Grammy’s for his constant whistling, singing, and mouth trumpets. He was a natural story teller which revealed his proud Irish heritage, and his keen intellect and good humor will be sorely missed.
He was preceded in death by his beloved sister Kathleen Tomasulo. He is survived by his parents Eugene & Cecilia Kenney; sister Claire and husband David Scheumeister, brother in-law Peter Tomasulo. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Holly Kenney; son Patrick Kenney and wife Cara, daughter Shannon Murdock and husband Patrick, and daughter Colleen Nollen and husband Pete. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren Jack, Colin, Molly, Luke, Sam, and Peyton.
The family will receive family and friends on Saturday August 4, 2012 from 10:00am till noon at Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel at 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to CARES, in memory of Glen Kenney, c/o Chesterfield Fire & EMS Fire Administration, P.O. Box 40, Chesterfield, Virginia 23832.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the bravery of the Chesterfield Fire Department , Stations 1 & 5 and the Chesterfield Police department for the their heroic efforts on Sunday. Condolences may be left at: www.woodyfuneralhomeparham.com.
