Obituario de Herbert Lucas Moody Jr.
Herbert Lucas Moody, Jr., Esquire, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024 at the age of 90. He was born in Florence, SC. After graduating high school in Florence, Herbert attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC, followed by a two-year service in the US Army. Upon completion of his military service, Herbert matriculated to the University of South Carolina for his undergraduate studies in Business. Herbert then entered the University of South Carolina School of Law, earning his law degree. Following graduation, Herbert embarked on a forty-three year career in the law profession, beginning and ending his career with the Department of Justice in Washington, DC with only a short four-year hiatus into private practice in Taylors, SC. Upon returning to the Department of Justice in 1972, Herbert spent his distinguished career in the Tax Division as a litigator and supervisor, retiring as a Senior Tax Attorney in 2005. Herbert was an avid tennis player, and enjoyed the ocean beaches, spending much of his retirement at Bethany Beach, DE and Naples, FL. His hobbies included gardening, scouring antique shops for unique pieces, and making margaritas with fresh limes plucked from his trees. He appreciated North American flora and was known to point out various tree species, with accompanying facts, when out and about. He also showed an astounding knowledge of the local bird species and was able to identify vintage cars by the smallest nuance. Herbert’s wife, Grace “Gari” Platt, whom he met through tennis, preceded him in death in 2011, after over 20 years together. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Herbert Moody, Sr. He is survived by his five children from his first marriage: John Moody (Tracey), Kimberly Moody, Rebecca Ostrom (Peter), Allison Moody (Johan), and David Moody (Erin), grandchildren: Paige Moody, Joshua Moody, Tyler Frye, Sheridan Frye, Samantha Ostrom, Nicholas Ostrom, Lucas Angell, and Iseline Angell, and a niece, Tracy Scruggs, nephew, Caswell Spencer III, three great nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank the staff at Spring Arbor Salisbury Senior Living Community in Midlothian, VA for their support and care of Herbert during his time there. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org/research) in memory of Herbert L. Moody, Jr. or the charity of your choosing.
