Hope Poindexter, a devoted mother, nurse, and proud veteran, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024, at the age of 76. Born Charlotte Hope Miller on April 1, 1948, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Hope lived a life of service, compassion, and love.
Hope dedicated her early career to serving her country as a nurse in the United States Air Force, where she cared for countless service members with unwavering dedication. After being honorably discharged, she continued her commitment to public service by working with the Virginia Department of Health.
An alumna of Penn State, where she earned her undergraduate degree, and George Washington University, where she obtained her master’s degree, Hope was a lifelong learner who valued education and hard work. Her passion for helping others extended beyond her professional life, as she was known for her kindness, generosity, and ability to make those around her feel seen and cared for.
Hope’s love for her family and friends was the cornerstone of her life. After her service to the state, she chose to become a stay-at-home mother to raise her beloved son, John S. Poindexter IV. She enjoyed traveling, spending quality time with loved ones, and cherishing every moment of life’s journey.
She is survived by her ex-husband, Dr. John S. Poindexter III, and her son, John S. Poindexter IV, who were the lights of her life; and her sister, Lee Hynes and her husband Bill Hynes. Hope’s legacy of love, strength, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A memorial service to celebrate Hope’s life will be held on September 7, 2024, at Second Presbyterian Church. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation from 8:30 am to 10:30 am, with the service beginning at 10:30 am.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all family and friends who have reached out and offered their support during this time. Special thanks to Second Presbyterian Church for graciously hosting the service. We understand that not everyone will be able to attend, and we appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and love from near or far.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in honor of Hope’s spirit of giving.
