James Clore Eggleston, 94, passed away peacefully on July 26th at midnight, surrounded by family. He was born in Henry County, Virginia, October 16, 1928, to Dorsey Minter Eggleston and Emma Vera Clore Eggleston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Wayland, Carl, and Judson Eggleston.
Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mariett; their three sons Eric (Debbie), Mark (Tara), and Tom (Lori); and seven grandchildren: Hannah, Liam, Eli, Colin, Mallory, Darcy, and Ann-Cambell.
Jim first graduated from Virginia Tech in 1952 earning a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering and served in the Corps of Cadets. To say he was a proud Hokie would be a major understatement! He then served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, returning to Virginia Tech to earn both bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering. His hobbies included VA Tech football, skiing well into his 80s, and playing a competitive game of bridge. Amongst his many skills, Jim had a knack for skillfully completing any mechanical or electric repair with vigor and success. He coached his sons to be fiercely self-sufficient, despite their ineptitude in holding the light correctly! “DADBLAMEIT!”
A memorial service will be held Saturday July 29th at 3 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 7757 Chippenham Parkway, Richmond, VA 23225
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Wounded Warrior Project in his memory.
