

John R. Curtis, passed away on May 9, 2011. Born on December 23, 1931, in Hammond, Indiana, to Lawrence W. and Christine Stewart Curtis. Graduate of Central High School in Pueblo, Colorado, The University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, and the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin.
He spent his career with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, beginning as a Trainee Bank Examiner, rising through the ranks as a Regional Director of the Columbus, Ohio region and the Richmond Regional Office, and, finally, as the Deputy to one of the 3-member Board of Directors of the FDIC in Washington, DC.
After retirement from the FDIC, he was a consultant on setting up deposit insurance programs with USAID in West Africa, the World Bank in China, and the government of Nigeria. He enjoyed boating and sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, home renovation projects, travel in Europe, South America, Egypt, China, and especially in the National Parks of the western US, particularly Utah and Colorado. He also enjoyed traveling with the youth of River Road Church on their summer construction mission trips to Maine, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and working on Habitat for Humanity projects in Richmond.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Doris, his brother Lawrence W. Curtis, Jr. (Theresa), of Ft. Worth, TX, two nieces, Lorraine Leonard (Vernon) and Elaine Sawyer (Tim) also of Ft. Worth, TX; his mother-in-law Mabel Dominey of Asheville, NC; his sister-in-law Marilyn Castagno (David) of Stansbury Park, UT; a niece Megan Sullivan Huffman (Matt) of Misoula, MT and a nephew K. Cody Sullivan (Ashli) of Stansbury Park, UT, and a very special cousin, Jane Doyle O'Malley (Thomas) and family of Chicago, IL as well as two great nephews Jason Haight (Jenni) of Ft. Worth, TX and Dillon Huffman of Misoula, MT, as well as many other loving family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 13, at River Road Church, Baptist, 8000 River Road, Richmond at 1:00p.m. Interment private.
