John Dulany Hurst

HURST, John Dulany, age 94, departed this life on November 5, 2016. He was born in Richmond, Virginia, on November 21, 1921, to Hugh Fonville Hurst of North Carolina and Agnes Debrito Hurst of Oporto, Portugal. Preceding him in death were sisters, Daisy Lorenson Hurst and Shirley Hurst Harris. Except for a brief period working for the Fish and Wildlife Department in Alaska, John lived in Richmond, Va. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1938, and was a member of the Cadet Corps. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and afterward returned to Virginia Tech, graduating with a B.S. in economics. He worked for US Plywood for 30 years. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris; and their four children, Robin Hanway, Roger, Jamie and Winston; and four grandchildren, Will, Natalie, Taylor and Madison. John was an avid reader of history, politics and nature, loves he shared with his family. Favorite authors included Ernest Thompson Seton and Louis L'amour. The family wishes to thank New Century Hospice, Home Helpers and The Towers for their many acts of kindness, and special friend Gay Fraser for her tireless support. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory to your favorite charity would be appreciated. A celebration of John's life will be held at Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, at 2 p.m. November 18, 2016.
