

OWEN, Dr. John Thomas "Tom" of Richmond died on August 24, 2016. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years Suzanne Doumlele Owen; his son Dr. John Randall Owen and wife Dr. Meredith Parks; his daughter Courtney Owen Mattes and husband Joshua ; his grandsons Owen, Jacob, and William Mattes and Thomas Owen; his brothers William, Robert, Wayne, and James Owen; his mother-in-law Ruth Doumlele; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Norris and Phyllis Owen, his sister Rebecca Owen Blackburn, and his father-in-law John A. Doumlele.
Dr. Owen was born in Portsmouth, VA, raised in the Deep Creek area of Chesapeake, and graduated from Deep Creek High School. He received a BS in Chemistry from the University of Richmond and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. Following medical school, he completed a residency in family practice through MCV.
Dr. Owen spent his entire career as a family physician with Chesterfield Family Practice. He was beloved by his numerous patients, colleagues, and co-workers. In addition to his successful clinical practice, he was a Clinical Professor and mentor to over three decades of VCU Family Practice residents. Dr. Owen was a Diplomate of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Department Chief of Family Medicine at Chippenham Hospital, Past President of the Manchester Medical Society, and member of both the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians and Richmond Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Owen was a devoted husband and father and loving grandfather. He particularly enjoyed attending his children's many athletic events. He loved American history and reading historical biographies. In his later years he enjoyed gardening, European cruises with his wife, walking his golden retrievers, and doting on his grandsons. His kind words and gentle nature will not be forgotten.
A memorial service in honor of Dr. Owen will be held at 2 pm on Saturday September 10, 2016 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 8706 Quaker Lane, Bon Air, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Michael's Episcopal School, the Southeastern Virginia Golden Retriever Rescue, or the American Diabetes Association.
