Leslie Eckmann, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, educator, and lifelong learner, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Reynold and Nancy Thomas, and her sister, Linda Thomas.
Leslie is survived by her devoted husband of 34 years, Scott Eckmann; her daughter, Annie Eckmann; and her stepchildren, Michael C. Eckmann (Julie) and Kristen L. Schilling (Christopher). She was a proud and loving grandmother to Grace Wickersheim (Dylan), Jack Schilling, and Meghan Eckmann. She is also survived by her sister, Melissa Froede (Ron), and her brother, Butch Thomas (Kathy), as well as her niece and nephew, Jessica Vinsmoke and Scott Froede (Veronica).
Born on September 24, 1953, in Germany, Leslie grew up with a deep curiosity about the world that shaped her life as a learner and teacher. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 1974 as a member of the first fully integrated class of women to earn degrees from the university—an achievement she held with pride throughout her life.
After a successful career in the insurance industry, Leslie found her true calling as a mother and educator. She dedicated more than 20 years to St. Michael’s Episcopal School, where she served as a teacher and active member of the school community. Her patience, kindness, and commitment to education left a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues.
Leslie loved the beach, especially time spent on Cape Cod, and found joy in reading, Hallmark movies, quiet moments, and meaningful conversations. Above all, she cherished her family, her church, and the opportunity to keep learning throughout her life.
A service celebrating Leslie’s life will held be on June 13, 2026 at 11am at Manakin Episcopal Church, 985 Huguenot Trail, Midlothian, VA 23113. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial gifts be made to the Lawrence Mason Scholarship at Manakin Episcopal Church or to St. Michael’s Episcopal School to create the Leslie T. Eckmann Endowment to honor Leslie’s enduring commitment to education and faith.
